PURDUE’S SORE DEFEAT CHICAGo’s FOOTBALL TEAM STRONG Err THAN EVER THIS YEAR. An Indianapolis football crank” who witnessed the Chicago-Purdue game on Saturday says Purdue has no reason to feel despondent the result. 1T was the real thing the Purdue men went against” said the crank. land it will do the West Lafayette team much good Coach Best now has the work of Stages men as an object lesson in fast playing, and the Purdue coach will see that his men are little quicker on their feet before they enter another contest. Sheldon was nearly the whole thing in the Chicago game. This is his fourth year with the Maroons, and they may never have an other sprinter to equal him. His runs were phenomenal and the manner in which he evaded the Purdue tackles was marvellous. In one play four men had their hands on him, but he shook them off and continued his run to the goal line. The way Chicago hurdled for gains was a revelation. Some times before the Purdue men were aware where the ball was Chicago player would leap over the scrambling mass and secure gain of five to ten yards. THE game was fierce from start to finish. Purdue went into ii In disabled condition and came out with several candidates for the hospital. G. Miller, Walter Krull and others were forced to retire. Game Captain Leslie was almost laid out several times. Kaylor, who has bruised muscle. did not go into the game until the last few minutes of play. Riebel, another In dianapoiis man, was one of. the stars for Purdue. Krull’s kicking was excellent. Purdue has strong alumni association in Chicago, and its members and their families went to the game in coaches dec Grated with the university colors. The Purdue Band and 400 ‘rooters’ from the university marched from the Chicago Beach Hotel to Marshall Field. The Purdue ‘rooters’ were in evidence throughout the game, but their efforts were unavailing. Some of the Purdue students protested vigorously against what was deemed extortion. 1t was understood the general admission charge was to be 80 cents, but no tickets were sold at less than Is cents, and reserved seats were 81 and $3.50. Nearly all the seats were reserved, and In consequence any person who desired to the game was forced to pay 81 or $l.50. The Purdue ‘rooters’ evened up matters by cap turing the best seats reserved for Chicago partisans, but later gave them up and returned TO the west side. Between 5000 and 5000 persons attended the game
