Probable Unbeaten and United Teams Do Not Meet in Conference Games Chicago, Nov. 9.-Considering the tophcavy scores the Minnesota touch down factory has been manufacturing, Gopher partisans possibly will eye with scorn any pretensions to the Big Ten title by Illinois and Purdue But both the Illini and the Boiler makers have an excellent chance Of finishing united and unbeaten in the conference, with legal claim to one-third Of the championship hon orS. Few doubt that the Gophers constitute the most powerful team grown In the midwest in many q day. Illinois, in my judgment and without partisanship, Is the most nimble, deft and scrappiest little team I ever have seen play football. Purdue has staged q courageous comeback, after a dis astrous opening, and now rates with the country’s top teams. There you have the class Of the Big Ten, each team q potential claim ant Of conference honors. Plrdue’s 26 to 20 victory over Chi cago’s scrappers was one of the most colorful games I’ve witnessed. The result bore out the fact that two half backs Of All-America caliber are bet ter than one, but not twice as good Jay Berwanger. Of Chicago, and Jim Carter and Duane Purvis, Of Purdue came out Of that game with their regulations enhanced. Halfbacks Star Consider their efforts. Purvis aver aged 81 yards each time he carried the ball. In the first quarter he threw two passes, good for q total gain Of 81 yards, placing the ball on Chicago’s 2-yard line, from where Carter scored. Purvis threw touchdown pass good for IS yards. which put Purdue ahead 20 to II, with one minute left

With the defeat went the Maroons’ hope OF disputing the conference title with Minnesota. 1t was their first setback in five starts this season, three OF which were against conference opponents. The Boilermakers, finally at their best after early season defeats by Rice Institute and Notre Dame, accounted for their second straight Big Ten triumph, going into a tie with Min nesota and Illinois for first place A crowd of 80 900, the best in several seasons in Stagg Field, was Just nicely seated when the Carter half of the twin” combination scored, Purvis’ passes had set the stage. The Boiler maker ace tossed two passes to Frank Haas, his left end, for and 30 yards. to the Maroon 2-yard line. Carter raced wide around left end for the touchdown, and Wayne Sandefur added the extra point A few moments later Carter burst through the left side of the Chicago line, twisted away from two men, and outran the Maroon secondary to complete 60-yard touch down journey.
