PLACE BY A KICK PURDUE ENABLED TO SCORE AGAINST ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY. Michigan Held Down by Notre m Northwestern Beaten by Chicago Other Western Games. Special to the indianapolis Journal. Special to the indianapolis Journal. CHAMPAIGN, Ill, Oct. 1S.-Purdue’s football team, fighting gamely, went down in defeat before the University of Illinois eleven on the latter’s grounds this after noon, the score at the close of the game being % to S. According to Coach Best the visitors played vastly better than they did against Chicago last Saturday, but on account of their poor physical condition and their inability to stop the home teams speedy runners, they were no match Tor the Illinois. The contest was hard fought but at no time was the result mucn IN doubt. The visitors could make little head way against Illinois’s magnificent defense, and seldom were they able to gain wnen they had the ball. The Purdue eleven could not successfully withstand the locals fierce rushes, which gradually exhausted the already weakened boiler makers, and six of the visiting players, including Cap tain Leslie, had to retire from the game. ulinois’s first touchdown was scored on a twenty-fve-yard run by Mckinley, who Sc cured the pigskin on a fumbled punt. The visitors protested this play, claiming that no Purdue man had touched the ball. Shortly afterwards Leslie made a fair catch and scored a goal from the twenty fve-yard line by a beautiful place kick. Steady gains gave the home team another touchdown before time was called, and the half ended with the score IL to 5. A forty-ive-yard run by Diener resulted in a touchdown just after the second half began, and later Stahl scored the fourth touchdown on another run of the same dis lance. Rowand skirted right end for forty yards and a number of shorter gains soon took the oval across Purdue’s goal line for the final touchdown. Both sides punted frequently during the latter part of the game, Beebe excelling Knapp and Miller in this department. The visitors lost considerable ground as a result of this punting, but Illinois would probably have scored at least once more If it had kept the pig skin and resorted to end runs. The principal credit for the home teams victory is due to Captain Stahi, Rothgeb and Cook, each of whom played brilliantly. Diener and Rowand figured prominently In the ground-gaining. Captain Leslie and Davidson were the particular stars of the Purdue eleven, and their loss by INJURY was severely felt. Mills, Allen. Knapp, Kaylor and Zimmerman also distinguished themselves.
