Irish and Spartans 19-Point FaVorites To Stay on Top Today NEW YORK, Oct. 1.-THE way the high-rated teams in col lege football have been STUN bling and staggering along in this year of one-platoon play, surprises have become the COM monplace. No upsets are anticipated, of course, when mighty Notre Dame swings back into action against Pitt and Michigan State trots onto the field for a Big Ten clash against Indiana today. But some of Che teams rated below the Irish and Spartans could be in for unhappy times, indeed. y Both these big teams are 49, point choices in the latest list of odds. but each Should be able to win just as it pFeases. Notre Dame will have Johnny Lattner available for the s&ntire game, : with his ankle healed, while the Spartans will be in no mood to fool as they rush toward their showdown Big Ten games. If they win, it win be No. 20 straight. Georgia Tech Shaky FavOrite. Georgia Tech, nursing q 30 game undefeated skein, is the favorite over Auburn, but shaky one. This Auburn club upset Mississippi and tied Mis- SiSSippi State in it’s last two outings and could cause all sorts of trouble. Illinois, despite it’s upset VIC tory over Ohio State last week, still must prove itself. The 1llini take on Minnesota in an other game that could go either way. The result of this one probably will determine whether Illinois is going to make a seri- GUS bid for the Big Ten title It will be j. c. Caroline of Illinois against All-America Paul Giel of Minnesota in a battle of two of the finest backs in the Midwest. The NCAA’S televiSion game OF the day will come from Birmingham, Ala, where Alabama plays Tennessee. These two teams aren’t the powerhouses of old, but ‘Bama rates a 13-point choice. Game time is 2:45 pm. Boston College Wins. There wasn’t as much Friday night action as usual, with only a scattering of important games. West Virginia remained unbeaten by defeating George Washington, 27–6. Boston Col lege defeated Fordham, 20–13. with Dick Gig Zag) Zotti scoring two touchdowns, kicking 2 extra points and intercepting a Ford ham pass on the goal line. Detroit clubbed Villanova, 27–0, in an intersectional clash. Utah State beat Brigham Young, 14–7, in a Skyline Conference game. The three teams directly underneath Notre Dame and Mich igan State in the weekly Associated Press poll face what they hope will be relatively easy tasks today. Maryland. No. 8, plays North Carolina; UCLA, No. 4, goes against Stanford. and Michigan, co-favorite for the Big Ten title, engages Northwestern. Duke visits New York for a game with Army. Baylor. cur rent favorite in the Southwest Conference, should have an easy time with Vanderbilt. But Rice, which also could win it, will have to show at its best against Southern Methodist. Top game in the East pits Ohio State against Penn. The Buckeyes, after the Illinois up set last week, figure to go at the Quakers with a vengeance. In Ivy League games it’s Yale Cornell and Columbia-Dartmouth.
