GEORGE WASHINGTON Need for Drummond Demonstrated Again For instance, on Saturday in the 20–16 loss to West Virginia here. CIV had Just been stung by Homer Criddle’s 44-yard burst for a touchdown. and trailed, 20–8, with IL minutes remain ing. The Colonials had to match that touc h d Down i’m mediately, hold on defense and somehow score again. Mike Holloran returned the kickoff SO yards to the CIV Al, and Drummond. Fullback Don Lauer and Quarterback Merv Holland went to work. On q third-and-3 situation, Drummond turne d right end for 5 yards and q first down on the West Virginia Is. and lay there twitching with leg cramps. CIV called time out and Dick finally got up but Trainer Harry Ledford ordered him to the bench. He limped off the field as Jody Glass ran on. Holland hit one Of two passes and now it was third down again, on the Mountaineer 8. Glass cracked off right tackle and didn’t quite reach the s. yard line. Holland. faced with fourth and 21a to go. passed. The ball was Jared loose from Fred Yakin on a good defensive play in the end zone. CIV had used up almost exactly five minutes in the unsuccessful foray. West Virginia moved quickly out of danger and, with Fullback Dick Leffridge accounting for 20 yards in three charges, reached the CIV % before Chuck Kinder missed his third field goal of the day. I The Colonials now had the ball on their 20 with 1855 remanning. Drummond limped off again with a recurrence Of leg cramps on the first play, and Holla n d did well in moving them to a touchdown, but the issue was no longer in doubt The outcome was determined earlier when CIV, needing 5 yards for a first down or 8 for a touchdown, didn’t get either. AS Coach Jim Camp explained it later, q healthy Drummond figures to get those 5 yards in two carries, or if he doesn’t even get the ball he . creates problems for the de- Tense which make the other running backs more successful. And it demonstrated once , more that there is only one . Horse at CIV. and there won’t ; be another in the foreSeeable future.
