Minnesota Football Champions Make Chicago’s sawbones Look Like Six Badly Bat tered Nickes. Visitors Could Do Nothing Against ‘Varsitys Stonewall Defense---Nebraska Beats Doane College. Minnesota 27. Minnesota 27. Chicago Physicians and Surgeons O. Minnesota’s stalwart gridiron heroes made good gloriously yesterday, and sent the varsity rooters home to happy dreams of future glores for the maroon and gold. Before an enthusiastic crowd of over 1000, DR.. Williams brawny boys battered holes in the stone wall defense of the Chicago p and S. aggregation and administered crushing and decisive defeat to that star football crowd. All fears that beset the hearts of the faith full are put away forever. This year, as last, Ski-U-Mah spells victory. Well may Phil King practice secretly behind closed gates, and view the prospects of the Badger team dubiously. The team that defeats Minnesota this year will have a title clear to the Western championship. Before yesterdays game the rooters heart was anxious and his voice was small. 1t was wonderful what a trans FORMING effect the game had upon the rooter contingent. The Nebraska bugaboo Is now thing of the past, and the rooters are eager for Wisconsin. The game yesterday was altogether too one-sided to be intensely exciting; in many ways it was crude; there was chance for much Improvement in the play OF both teams. But it was interesting as showing where the Minnesota team of 1861 stands, and it proved this point most conclusiyely. The Chicago team expected to get beaten, but by no such score. 1t has been their boast that no team could score more than two touchdowns on them. Minnesota went this three better indeed four better, although the last touchdown was not officially counted. The varsity team has much room for Improvement, but the Improvement over last week was so marked, that the game OF yesterday gave even greater hope for next Saturdays performance. Mime sofas defense was magnificent, almost perfect. Page Flynn and Mueller prescented an impenetrable front. They did not have proper opportunity to fully show how strong they are in defensive work because Chicago did not hit the line over dozen times during the game. The ball was in Minnesota’S possession almost all the time, and when the p and S. got it they were forced to punt. They were alb solutely unable to make an impression against the Minnesota line. The main weakness of the university was the poor interference. This will have to be de- Veloped. There were very few long runs on this account; whenever varsity player tried for good run around the end he was unaided by proper interference. The team played strong offensive S6IllIlS started at times. The Chicago boys were SO clearly outclassed that they got little chance to display their prowess. They played pluckily, and with good spirit, and Oh four occasions held the big varsity team right at their goal and secured the pail. Ihey were evidently not in the best form. They were winded early in the game, and after every scFimmage a Chi cago man was stretched out on the field done up. The cry of ‘‘Time OUT coming without fail after every play, because monotonous. The university team played throughout the game without mishap to any of the players. They were strong throughout, and just as fresh at the close as they were when the game started. ALL PLAYED WELL. The team work was the best by long odds that they have exhibited this year. All the men got into the game early and often. All the men distinguished them selves at different times. Fee played an especially strong and brilliant game, making the largest gains. Rogers, the indian, played ferociously, and went through the line time after time for big gains. Dobie played a brilliant game and was fighting from start to finish. With proper interference he would have achieved some remarkable runs Indeed, Do+-4e played as we’ll as he did at any game of last season. Aune was the same old-line bucker as of yore, and Johnny Flynn was very much in evil dence. Allen, in the first half, played as If determined to win title to place on the team, and Boeckman, who sue ceeded him in the second ha.f, played even better. La Fans was consistent ground gamer. There was little opportunity on Minnesota’s side for tackling. Every man gave good account of himself BOECKMAN’s GREAT RUN. Although the score is officially q to 0, many went home believing that it was 80 to 0. With five minutes left to finish the last half, and the ball on Minnesota territory, Boeckman made a sensational seventy-yard run, lodging four men, and planted the pigskin behind the Chicago goal. The crowd went wild, the band played, the rooters yelled, the official scorers chalked it up “S3 to o.” and the varsity boys lined up again. Suddenly the two teams walked back to the Min nesota forty-yard line and lined up Just where they had Oeen when Boeckman. made his run, and it was discovered that somebody in authority had decided that when Boeckman made his star play, two Minnesota men were offside, so the sem sational run was all for naught, and the touchdown was not counted. Before the ball could be put In play again the game was over. The Chicago captain, after the game, said that the strength shown by Minnesofa was surprising, and asserted that the university would win the Western championship if they maintained their gait. DR.. Williams was very well pleased altogether, although he felt that the team did not do its best. He considered the game fine practice for the team, and was not worrying because the score was not larger. The general impression among experts was that Minnesota looks strong er than last year, and unless something unforeseen happens the Gophers should land at the top. There is very little fear as to the result Of the Nebraska game now The team should improve quite a bit the coming week and be at its hest when Nebraska comes. The Game. It was ten minutes past when the husky Gopher team trotted out on the field, amid the wild cheers of the rooters and the music of the band. Chicago had the kick-off. and Bothne sent the ball sailing forty-five yards to La Fans, who regained twenty Here the GopherS were held on downs twice. and Knowlton was forced to kick. He punted fifty
