THE GRID|R0N. The Boys from Bates College Scores on Harvard. Put Up Remarkably Good Play Game Ends; Harvard, l6; Bates, s. TUFTS Scores on Yale.-lhc Results Of Other Games. Saturday. IbtStoI, W. b.--I1dlNdii Nd5 sOItlv disappointed in her foot BAN game with Bates on Soldiers field. yesterday afternoon. Not only did Harvard fail to run up the big score that she was looking for. but the Maine boys sue ceeded in getting Il touchdown. In the Very last minute of play Swami fun bled the ball, and Blake, right end on the Bates eleven. got it on the 25-yard linz and with 9 single man for interference he carried il over the line Matthews, who played quarter on the crimson in the second half. made a deS- perate attempt to avoid the touch down. but he only got his man just after ne had crossed the line. r. en- the Harvard supporters forgot their partisan feelings. ana chccrsd the play. ana the Bates supporters, % whom there was considerable NUM- her. went wild with enthusiasm. From way up in one corner OF the stand there came I united cheer for the Maine college. The happiest set on the field We’re the players themselves. They took off their head gear and waved it over their heads. while they jumped in the air for joy. 1t was n sight Very similar 10 the performance Of the Carlisle In dians. when they scored on the Climson, last fall. The Maine boys came to Cambridge with the expectation of getting a good sound beating and they went back with six points against the Crimson. while the Crimson had scored only l6 points on them. In spite of the fact that they came with the expectation of being defea ted they tried hard to score. Three times Allen dropped back for Il place kick, the first from their own 4S-yard line. Fully 2000 people witnessed the game from the grand stands. The afternoon was almost an ideal one for a foot ball game. The air was crisp and inVigorating. and the sky clear. Harvard bucked the line for the most part. yesterday. but she varied it with an occasional end play. Her rushing game was faster than it has been, and her small score was due more to FUN bling than to inability TO gain ground Several times they lost the ball, when they We’re plowing their way straight down the field for a touchdown. Once the tumble came at Bates l0-yard line Bates lpSofttu 10 tfItk tbt gains. and all of them were made on that style of play. She could make very little impression on the Harvard line Baldwin started the game at quarterback for Harvard. and handled his team well. At times he was rather slow getting his plays off. He was not so much responsible for the fumbling as was Sargent. for the latter passed the ball very poorly all the afternoon. Matthews had charge of the Grim son during the second half. He has been playing that position on the sec ond for the two days previous to yes terdays game, and showed up so well that he was given trial on the Var sity. He plays his new position we’ll. especially on the defensive. His tack ing IS always good and at times brilliant He runs his team well, but is a little slow in passing the ball. Haryard’s interference on punts and end plays was better, yesterday. than heretofore. 1t was quick in forming. and stayed together well. The mass plays were not so fast as they might have been. Ristine at right halfback is too fast for any two men that have yet played back of the line with him. Capt Campbell missed two goals again, yesterday. both of which were easy. The first hit the cross bar. and the second went way off to the side.

HARVARD, 16; BATES, 6. THE CRIMSON JOINS THE BIG TEAMS SCORED AGAINST cambridge. Mass. Oct. 5-Hsrvsrd won a slow and spiritless game against Bates to-day by the score or is TO 6. There q great amount OF rum bling to which is directly traceebe Harvarc’s failure to score more. and what is important Bates’s ability at all. Just after the KICKOFF Ristine made a forty yard ran just outside tackle and good gains through the line carried the ball down the field and Mihl,n was pushed across. After the next kickoff Harvard and Midiin, and the latter made his second touch down The half ended with the ball IN the middle OF the field. In the second half Harvard put IN q large number OF new men. who lacked both speed and spirit. In fact this decidedly Batess half. After the kickoff Bates attempted to advance. but held after one or two short gains. Knowles made a twenty-five yard around left end for touch down, fighting every inch OF the way. Campbell missed his second goal. Harvard returned the kick off from the 2yard line. and Bates tried to place kick from the 62yard line. which fell short. Later. with the ball getting and nearer to Harwards goal, the visitors tried place kick from the DO ano so yard lines, both misses. Harvard then attempted to rush, but Swan fumbled the 20 yard line, and Blake. OF Bates, got the ball and made splendid rum with the interference of Allen, for touchdown. Allen kicked the goal after the punt out. and this ended the game. Matthews. who has only just been changed from end TO quarter. did good running, but his passing as might be expected, was high, which may account for of the fumbling. Rstine showed that he has found his place, for he was speedy and good ground gamer. Knowles showed the best ability to fight his way for every foot. After the game Reid. the head coach, ordered the varsity out OF the locker room and lined them up against the freshmen for about fifteen minutes OF play. No scoring done. The varsity in It’s first line plays fumbled three times. The lineup:
