third bowl appearance OF the just Sugar Bowl to Georgia by a 20–10’ in 1947 and this year to Oklahoma, 1876. Rice defeated Baylor today. 21–7. jacksonville Gator Bowl still was pleading with Virginia, despite its second straight defeat, but John Thomas, captain and spokesman for the Cavaliers, announced Immediately after the game that his teammates positively were not interested. It was a bitter defeat for the Cavaliers, who never have been to a bowl, for with IS seconds to play they were only yards from a pos sible tie and had first down with goal to go. Virginia, not North Carolina, would have been the visiting Cotton Bowl team had the game been deadlocked. That was for sure, as Carolina had an nounced it would compete only if it won. Virginia would have gone with a victory or tie. o., Three Vain Passes. Three straight times from the eight-yard line, Steve Osisek took pitchouts from Whitley Michels and fired passes into the end zone. Two were batted down by an ever-alert Tar Heel pass defense and the other was long. Ralph Shoaf tried to squeeze eight yards on a double reverse on fourth down but he was stopped cold. In that seemingly endless IS seconds. there was still time for the Tar Heels to run a play. and they killed the ball. North Carolina packed its two touchdowns into the second period, one on a 14-yard scamper by Justice on q direct pass from center to his wingback position, and another on a pass from JUS tice to his All-America teammate, Art Weiner, that covered 63 yards. Virginia was amateurish on pass defense on that one. 5}ats’ The Tar Heels were through for the day on defense after their last score. Virginia controlled the ball throughout the second halt and in the two final periods Carolima didn’t gain a foot on the ground and completed one pass for nine yards. AS in its losing scrap with Tulane last week, Virginia controlled the statistics but lost the ball game. In Danger Of Shutout. Virginia was a precious few minutes from being shut out for the first time in Art Guepe’s four years as head coach when it started the fireworks. Kenan Sta dium’s largest crowd, $4,000 sun kissed but chilled spectators, had little to cheer about through a comparatively dull second half. Then one Of the poorest punts in Justices career, an 11-yard effort that skidded out of bounds. gave heart to the Cavaliers and gave them the ball on the Caroline 43. Michels, rushed badly, missed on three straight passes, but on fourth down from kick formation he passed to Shoaf for a 17-yard gain to the Carolina 26. Johnny Papit, Shoaf and Mi chels alternated for a first down and Michels hit Washington’s Gene Schroeder with a bullet pass for another to the Carolina s.. Papit, Shoaf and Michels alter mated in taking it to the l and Michels scored on a quarterback sneak. Carlton Elliott converted and with 80 seconds to play, Virginia trailed, 14–7. Everybody in the stadium knew Virginia would attempt an on side kick-and everybody was right. Jimmy Lesane swiped weakly at the ball and it failed to travel the necessary 10 yards, but as Carolinians dove for the ball it was fumbled and Harri-. son Nesbitt of Virginia recovered on his own 48. Bowl Bid in Balance. LeSane clicked on a 22-yard pass play to Schroeder, who almost was away. Then Michels lateraled to Lesane and he, too.
