Finest Virginia Team In IS Years, Carolina Coaches Say Of Loser SOUTHERN PINES. N. c.. Nov. 28.-Beaten and bowl-less Virginia left its best impression in years in North Carolina in Saturdays 14–7 defeat at Chapel Hill by the Cot ton Bowl-bound Tar Heels. One Carolina coach said it was the best Virginia team he had seen in Is years. Another said it sure was surprise to him. THAT was a good football team. a bowl team, “ Line Coach Marvin Bass said, “the best team we’ve played outside Of Notre Dame with the possible exception of Tennessee. And Carolima has played rugged schedule. The words of praise were lost on the Cavaliers, however, as they wanted to beat Carolina badly. A number of coaches. reporters and we’ll wishers who visited the Virginia dressing room after the game all said they never had seen such dismay. The Cavaliers knew they were Cotton Bowl visitors with a victory or a tie. And that tie was only eight yards away with four downs to 60 in the last min ute of play. Virginia was crushed by the defeat. Papit, Virginia Line Praised. John Papit was praised by the Carolina coaches. and so was the Virginia line that stopped the Tar Heels cold in the second half. Carolina gained 81 yards rushing in the first half and that was its ground total for the entire game. The Tar Heels completed only two passes in a second half COM pletely dominated by the Cavaliers. Charley Justice, who on an in jured ankle scored one touchdown on a deception-f1lled run of IA yards and passed to Art Weiner for the other, was singled out for praise by Coach Art Guepe of the Cavaliers. Guepe visited the Carolina dressing room after the game, shook Justices hand and said, you’ve beaten us four straight years as star of the Tar Heels. You’re the greatest halfback I’ve ever seen.” Virginia lost to North Carolina because of ineffectiveness through the air and, for the second straight week, questionable signal calling. The Cavaliers twice were rolling toward the Carolina goal in the first half on the ground when they took to the air. Both times interceptions stopped the drives. Cavaliers Set for 1850. Papit, who fumbled and cost the Cavaliers the ball deep in Carolima territory in the first quarter, was used sparingly in the second half. Yet for the past two seasons Papit has been a second half ball carrier. He couldn’t understand it. Virginia loses nine players by but it is said to have ample requirements in the fresh men. And next year Coach Guepe will have to make more use Of Jimmy lie Sale, the southpaw who was used SPAR ingly this season. He’ll have to, because Whitley Michels will be graduated. Virginia concluded the season with seven victories and two defeats, plus the small consolation that both defeats could have been victories. Virginia still is the only team to beat Penn badly, as Pitt and Army beat the Quakers by a point and Cornell did so in the last few minutes. Cavalier football Is on the up grade and there will be more bowls. -WH1TTLESEY. ‘
