Duke Beats Georgia Tech 2714 M Noses Out Texas 10 Cox S Passes Prove Margin Of Victory For Durham Eleven ATLANTA. Oct. 20 - The little men of Duke and Georgia Tech. charging like angry heavyweights, stalled each other on the ground, but Billy Coxs brilliant passes could not be stopped and Duke won today, 27–14. A near sellout crowd of $4,000 saw Tech completely outplay Duke in the first half and take TO lead. But Duke came back with all its q points for a convincing victory. In that first half. Dukes best defensive play was Blaine Earon’s work at end. In the second half, Earon was joined by Cox, Jack Mounie and hard smashing Duke line. Five Straight Compilations. On one Duke drive, Cox threw five consecutive completed passes. Mounie scored three touchdowns. This was Coach Wallace Wade’s first victory over Bobby Dodd of Tech, and Dukes first win over the Georgians in four games. The loss about ends Techs hopes of bid to a bowl. An earlier game was dropped to Tulane. while Duke has lost to Navy. Tech won the battle of statistics in nearly every phase. but with Mounie’s goal line punching and Coxs mid-field passing. Duke had the punch when it was needed most. Techs first touchdown was razzle-d dazzle football. Quarter back Jimmy Southard launched whacky play by handing the ball to Jimmy Jordan. Jordan tipped 1t to Buster Humphreys who fooled everybody by passing to End Dick Harvin, who scored the touch down. Bobby North kicked the point. After intermission Duke roared for II yards. Cox passed perfectly five consecutive times, the last one to Jack Friedlund for touch | down. Mike Souchak kicked his first of three placements. Before Tech could get its breath | Duke scored again. Mounie smack ing across from the three-yard ! line. In the last quarter the game almost became a rout for Duke. Mounie broke through from the three-yard line twice more for touchdowns. These two were set up by pass 1nterceptions. Tech re-collected its wits late in the game and Sophomore Back Roy Thompson twisted through Duke for “a yards and the final touchdown.
