Penn’S victory last Saturday in Philadelphia was the worst beating suffered by Navy this season. Wisconsin scored more points the previous week, to be sure. but intercepted passes and recovered fumbles helped the Badgers. Penn over whelmed Navy legitimately. There’s some question as to PENIS power. despite its unmarred record. Against Navy, Coach George Munger’s team seemed adequate. Yet Penn barely nosed out Princeton, IA 13. whereas Navy handled the Tigers with ease. But, for that matter. which way is Navy 60 ing? Up or down? The Midshipmen were i’m pressive, if beaten, in their opener against Southern Cali fornia. Promise of better days seemed unmistakable when the Sailors whipped Princeton and Duke. But in the Wisconsin game they sloughed off and Saturday they slid back even more. Navy never got untracked. With less than five minutes of the third quarter played, the Midshipmen trailed by 21–0. They finally scored early in the final period, with substitutes in the backf1eld, but Penn got that touchdown back in nine minutes and thus the score remanned, 28–7. Navy’s chances this Saturday against Notre Dame in Baltimore virtually are nil. Name your own score, although the Irish never make it a practice to pour it onto Navy. But whereas the Middies are young, inexperienced, comparatively light and undoubtedly tired. Notre Dame is headed toward another mythical national championship and. further more. is rested after an easy engagement with Open Date. To Navy supporters, who’d hoped this was the year in which the Academy would take its place among the Eastern powers. patience is reconmended. Barring a miracle, Navy can hope for no more than, three yictories-two of which have been won. If the Middies do better, they ought to replace the statue of Tecumseh with one of Sauer. STANN.
