NINE TEAMS IN RUNNING IN FOOTBALL Nine teams held the thinning line of major unbeaten-untied col lege football forces today, but the casualty rate is getting terrific. The season may be lucky to squeeze through with as many per- feet elevens as last year when Michigan, California and Clemson alone closed out with spotless escutcheons. California and Clem- son fell later in bowl games. Notre Dame and Army, the coun- try’s two top-ranking powers, ap- pear good bets to survive the last six weeks of wrangling without mishap and fourth-place Oklahoma may extend it’s string. But the other untarnished teams California, Cornell, Baylor, Penn sylvania, Boston U, and Virginia have rough seass ahead. FOUR TEAMS TUMBLE Four teams with nothing but big, fat victories took a tumble Satur- day in the most violent reversal Of form this season. North Carolina, Minnesota, Ken lucky and Pittsburgh went down with a thump that jared budding towl hopes. North Carolina was stunned by Louisiana State in a night game at Baton Rouge, 13–7. The Tar Heels brilliant All America star Charley (Choo Choo) Justice, was held with tight rein by stubborn defensive play. MINNESOTA TRIMMED Minnesota’s Gophers, already eye ing the Rose Bowl, were trimmed by Michigans defending national champions who bounded back from two straight defeats on the strong play of Chuck Ortmann to win 14–7. Bear Bryant’s Kentucky, riding g five-game winning streak, lost U Southern Methodist, 20–7, witt Kyle Rote furnishing the SMC spark in the absence of flu-ridder Doak Walker. Pittsburgh, with its supporters beginning to dream of return te that old position of prestige, slip ped up against fired-up Indiana team. which broke an 11-game los ing streak to prevail, 48–14.
