Lions Twice Recover Own FumbIes on Play That Gains Day, 14–7 NEW YORK, Oct. with 40 seconds to play, Co-Capt. Leon Van Bellingham fumbled lateral, but picked it up. ran wide around right end and scored with the touchdown that enabled Columbia to defeat Harvard today, 14–7. While a crowd of $4,000 gasped, Bob Russell took the pass from center on the Harvard Is. He dropped the ball, then lateralled to Van Bellingham, who was in the clear. The latter then proceeded to tumble. but he, too, recovered and dashed over. Russell made the conversion. Other than that, there was little to choose between the two Ivy League teams. They spent almost the entire game pushing each other up and down the field. Both had some breaks, but each time a drive started, it was broken up. The final Columbia rally. which gave the Lions their second straight victory, was the longest of the day, eating up 73 yards in II plays. The game started as though it were going to be high-scoring affair. Both teams notched touchdown in the first minute of play. In fact, they came about on the first four plays of the game, including the kickoffs. Harvard started it. On the first play, after the opening kickoff, Paul Shafer gained a modest three yards Then Jim Noonan tipped a running pass to John White, who took it on the Harvard As and raced the remaining SIS yards for the tally. Charley Walsh converted. Columbia’s turn was next. Vernon Wynott, who handled most of the Lion passing and running, took the kickoff on his own 10, stumbled a couple of times, then slithered through the entire Harward team, for a 90-yard run and the score. Russell place-kicked the tying point. For the next SO minutes, the crowd settled back. Harvard actually came closest to scoring in the interim, when Armando MAJ zone blocked a Columbia punt in the third period. He recovered the errant ball, was running along in the clear, but tripped and fell on the Is. 1t ended right there. COLUMBIA. Left end-strake, J.
