Army Rallies TO Beat Penn State, AZ 10 !, After Trailing Early WEST POINT, N. Y, Oct. L. Army’s football might and the weight Of numbers routed Penn State, ~ to 7. today after the huskies from the Nittany Noun tains had played the Cadets to a standstill through the first half The two halves were like two different games. Penn State won the first, 7 to 0. in a bruising ground battle. Then Army loosened up Penn State with Arnold Calf fa’s sharpshooting passes and romped through a weakened detense. And despite the score. Army had a battle on its hands. It wasn’t until the middle of the last quarter that Coach Earl Blaik re- 1ieved his first string offensive lineup with any appreciable num- Der OF substitutes. BY that time the Penn State starters. who played on both offense and defense through the greater part OF the game, had given way to subs, too. The crowd Of $4,000 ;amming Niche Stadium to capacity. got a surprise when State scored first in the middle of the second quarter. The teams had been slugging it out in midfield when a penalty to Army for roughing a kicker kept alive drive that had begun on Penn States 35. The Lions went on from there to score on six yard pass from Bill Luther to Owen Dougherty. That was the only time Penn State passed successfully. The lack of an air attack was their greatest offensive weakness. Four of seven other aerials were intercepted. Army. looking like a different team after the intermission. al most scored at once. But Luther intercepted one of Galiffa’s passes on the two-yard line. Halfway through the period, the Cadets tied the count when Galiffa sneaked over after his passes had put the ball in scoring position. Galiffa later tossed a 27-yard pass to Dan Foldberg on the three and Gil Stephenson put Army ahead. Four more touchdowns in the last period made it look easy. Jim Cain dashed 80 yards around end to- score in the first minute. Galiffa again tailed on a quarter back sneak. Then. as the reserves came in, Bob Blaik pitched a 35yard scoring pass to Frank Fischl and Herb johnson carried over after Bill Depew had broken through the weakening State line foc. 81 yards. Jack Mackmull made all the conversions. 4 PENN STATE. Lei end-smidansky Belts, Amprim. Left tackle-Norton, Hoovef Center-Beatty. Hederick. shumock. Right guard-Kelly. Felbaum. Bartek. Risht tackled.
