College Football Roundup NEW YORK, Oct. 25.-tR- -Col- lege football swings into the back stretch this week with games that should go a long way toward identl- lying the major bowl principals. California’s potent Bears look like a cinch for the Rose Bowl il they can squeeze by Southern Cal Saturday at Los Angeles. The Pasa- dena guest may be de cid ed al Evanston where Northwestern en- gages Ohio State. Down in Dixie, unblemished North Carolina and Georgia Tech, stick ing close to their telephones 1ol Sugar, Orange or Cotton Bowl feel CTS, run into large humps in theh schedules. The N. c. Tar Heels play Ten nessee at Knoxville and Vols coach Bob Neyland, a renowned pessimist, already has predicted an upset victory for his boys. Techs frisky Yellowjackets meet an undefeated Duke team that has been getting progressively better af- ter two opening season ties. The southwest feature is Southern Methodist against Texas at Austin Tie victor in this one could well land in the Gotten Bowl although Eoth must reckon with Baylor, which has only ts on its record. Job for BoUl Promoters The job for the bowl promoters was further simplified last Satur- day when two of the Il unblem shed teams were stricken from the list. Army’s powerful machine rolled over Cornell, 27–6, handing the Biz Red its first smudge. Penn State, riding victory string that covered the 1947 season, was tied by Michigan State, 14–14. The nine left without defeat or t.e in major ranks are: Michigan Metre Dame, North Carolina, Geor- gia Tech, Clemson, Army, Pennsyl- vania, California and Nevada Of these, Michigan, Notre Dan,e and Army aren’t bowl candidates and Pennsylvania, as an ivy leaguel is not overly receptive to hids Michigan, victor over Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl last year can’t return because of a confer ence rule against repeat perform ances. Notre Dame and Army don’t go in for the post-season extrava- ganZas. Wolverines Are Tn The Wolverines. elevated to the No. spot last week in the Asso- ciated Press poll, justified their se- lection by overwhelming Minnesota Saturday, 27–14. They are virtually in as big nine champions. Northwestern, beaten only by Michigan, then takes the lead in the Rose Bowl picture on the basis of it’s 19–16 triumph over Mime sota. But Ohio State also has lost only one game-to Iowa. California continued it’s display of offensive power in smashing Wash ington, 21–0. Oregon, beaten only by Michigan, still is in the running for the Pa cific Coast conference crown and the bowl spot But the Webfoots hopes depend on California stubbing a toe. All the other unbeaten-untied gi- ants came through last weeks tests under wraps excpt Pennsylvania. The Penn forces were handed a tre- mendous scare by winless Navy be- fore they squeaked through. 20-l4. Notre Dame pulled right over Iowa, 27–12. North Carolina showed it’s oldtime power which had been missing the week before in flashing Louisiana State, 34–7 Georgia Tech wallcped Florida, AFT, and Nevada smashed Tulsa, 65–15
