Duke Extended in Win Over Hard-baHlinq Virginia Tech, 10 ROANOKE, Va, Oct. 23.-Coach Wallace Wades 194S Duke University football team came into Victory Stadium today supposedly sporting footballs new look Two hours later, the Blue Devils went away with a TO triumph over Virginia Techs stubborn Gobblers. And most of the 5000 customers wondered just how much of new look” gridiron club the Blue Devils really are. For midway in the second chapter of this Southern Conference foot ball struggle, Wade dipped deep into his bag of tricks that won many q close game in years gone by and came out with an ancient reverse that won the battle. Hughes Goes As to Tally. 1t was second down. The Blue Devils had the leather on Techs As. Halfback Tommy Hughes took the ball on a reverse from Fullheck Jack Mo,lnie. Hughes then swung. to the right, almost went outside at the 40, hurdled two Virginia Tech players and wheeled to the touch down. End Mike Souchak converted. That one brilliant run which Hughes made practically by his lonesome was all the Blue Devils needed to win this defensive drama. In fact, except for a fruitleSs 81 yard drive by the Dukes in the clos ing moments of the fourth stanza, they didn’t seriously threaten to cross the final stripe again. With time running out, Duke took to Wade’s reverses again in desperate effort to try to beat by more than seven points the team that to date hasn’t been able to penetrate the scoring column. Folger’s Passes Fail. Led by Halfback Jack Friedlund, the Blue Devils rolled like clock work from their 80 to the Gobblers’ g.. There two of Freddie Folger’s passes failed to find their receivers and Tech took over. DUKE. Left end-Dunca Hess. souchak. TaFt obi Left guard-Davis. Marshall. Harris. Center-C.
