If Duke wins, the Blue Devils, perhaps not the clever, P ‘werful gridmen of pre-war days but still a hard-fighting, scrappy football club when the stakes are high, will rack up another Conference championship for Coach Wallace Wade. Should North Carolina triumph and the Tar Heels undoubtedly will be favored – the boys coached by crafty Carl Snavely won’t get anything, in all prob ability, out of their accomplish ment except a lot of satisfaction. A Carolina victory likely would hand the 1947 league crown to William and Mary’s Indians, a team the Tar Heels edged early in the season, 1877. William and Mary, which ran roughshod over Washington and Lee in the mud at Roanoke, Va, yesterday, 45–6, rested in second place with six triumphs in seven loop contests. Of course, William and Mary would need to beat the University of Richmond in their tradltional Thanksgiving day game at Richmond to sew up the bunting for positive, but that task should be only formality for the Spiders have won only three in nine outings. William and Mary takes time out from conference play for the second time this season Saturday afternoon to entertain an “outsider’‘- r’‘-State University of Bowling Green, Ohio, in test at williamsburg, Va. In addition to the Duke-North Carolina fray, only one other contest involving conference foes will be played this week. this being a tilt between David son and The Citadel at Charles ton, S. C, which will have no bearing on deciding the flag winner. The top battle outside the southern loop will bring together Virginia’s once-defeated Cav alters, and North Carolina States unpredictable Wolfpack at Charlottesville, Va. Virginia had tough time squeezing by West Virginia. 60, over the weekend, while State turned in one of the nations biggest up sets by hrashing Wake Forest, 200. In other weekend encounters, The Citadel won its first conference game Of the year by edging Virginia Military Institute, rs; North Carolina took advantage of three Maryland mistakes in the final period to whip the Terps, 1910; Virginia Tech won it’s third game in a row by dropping the University Of Richmond, 26–14; Wayne Uni versity saw to it that George Washington’s record of not having tasted victory this season remained intact, beating the Co. lonials, rs, and Clemson

Virginia Tech Beats Richmond In Mud by 26–14 BLACKSBURG, Va, Nov. Is Hard-running Virginia Tech was slowed only partially by a muddy field today as 1t rolled to q 26–14 Southern Conference triumph over battling University Of Richmond. The Gobblers piled up a 26- % lead in the first three periods and then survived a fighting finish by their Big Six foes which produced a tally in each of the last two periods. The field was soaked by down. pour which stopped shortly before game time, but, surprisingly, the ball changed hands on fumbles only once in the soggy contest. Tech tailed with only II minutes gone of the first quarter when Fullback Ray Beasley skirted right end for IL yards and a touchdown. Otey Meriwether, sophomore right end from Lynchburg, scooped up a blocked punt on the Spider IS early in the second period and raced across the goal for Techs second tally. The Gobbler attack produced an other touchdown with only four minutes gone in the second stanza when Substitute Right End Jim Adams blocked another Richmond punt, this time on the Spider 81, and sprinted to pay dirt. Midway in the third period, Substitute Quarterback Harry Walton was trapped as he attempted to pass from the Richmond IS. The Spiders powered to a first down on the Tech five late in the third period to set up their first score. Volt Bolen made one through the line and All-State Fullback Ed Ralston drove to the two on two line plunges. On the next play Ralston plowed through the Tech forward wall for the touchdown. Another Spider all-Stater, Half back Jack Wilbourne, smacked through left guard for 10 yards and the final touchdown in the fourth quarter. Tech outdistanced the Spiders 1874 to 10 in yardage rushing and rolled up IL first downs to Richmond s seven. Only in the air was Rich mond superior. Completing 8 of % passes for lat yards, the Spiders outgained Tech in that department. The Gobblers gained SO yards through the air.
