CAMBRIDGE, Mass, Oct. 25.- Adroitly avoiding most of the defensive pitfalls, Dartmouth’s hard driving young Indians raced into an early lead and then fought back Harvard’s furious second-half surg ings for a 14–13 triumph in the 51st football clash waged by those “Ivy League” rivals here today before $4,000. Late in the opening period the youthful invaders from the Han over, N. H., reservation stunned their heavily favored Crimson rivals by marching So yards for their first touchdown, made by Hal Fitkin from five yards out. Big Herb Carey kept his forces on the move with his line smash ing and after Sullivan moved the big green to Harvard’s 10 by pass ing to Bill Spoor, that fullback banged over two stripes for Dart mouths second touchdown, after which he made a second successful conversion. Early in the third quarter, Kal Moffie, one of the five Harvard left halfbacks in the thrill-packed acton, returned one of Captain jug Hannigan’s punts % yards to Dart mouths 81. Harvard then completed the third of its four aerials, Jim Noonan to Ken O’Donnell, for a first down on Dartmouth II and, after Chip Can non went to the 10, Moffie rushed twice before scoring from the S. When Buck Harrison, the Grim sons place-kicking specialist, came out to convert, ne was smeared by the hard d-charging Dale Armstrong and Dick Gowen, and the point they saved gave the Indians their first postwar win over the widely favored Crimson. That aroused Harvard to greater efforts and just as the finale opened Chip Cannon took off from mid field and lateraled to winger George Hill when he ran into a group OF defenders on the IS. Hill was dragged down on the 5 from where Gallon scored Harvard’s S second touchdown. Guardsman Emil Drvaric then took over the extra point assignment and made good much too late for Harvard’s cause.
