the team to end the .streaK. To our way of thinking. and it may sound strange, we believe that Army, now that they’ve been beaten, will prove to be an even better team than before. Our reasoning Is simply that the pres sure now is off, no longer will the players possess the tenseness as sociated with protecting a long streak without defeat. At Lafayette, Ind, there resides q man who helped coach, the West Pointers during most Of their long streak. He is Stu Holcomb, and the job he is doing with the Purdue Boilermakers Is remarkable. Two weeks ago Notre Dame had a difficult time winning from Purdue. We were accused of having an of day. Purdue had been badly beaten by Wisconsin at the start of the season. Rumors. especially sports rumors, travel fast. Purdue was supposed to be an easy mark after our game with the Boiler makers. Members of our coach ing staff and boys on the team tried to explain that there had been nothing wrong with Notre Dame that day. We simply had been fortunate to win from well-drilled, hard-hitting team. Saturday Afternoon undefeated Illinois found out about this Purdue team. The final score was 14–7 in favor Of Purdue. It is understandable that the Illini might not have been up for the game, with Michigan only a week OF. However, you’ve got to admire Holcomb’s handiwork with a group who q month ago were labeled “easy marks” II Illinois was guilty of think ing ahead to Michigan, it is equally conceivable that the Wolverines may have had SIM liar thoughts toward the Illini. In any event. the high-scoring Michigan machine was consider ably slowed down by Minnesota and had to come from behind to edge the Gophers, 1876. Other notable upsets were the 1910 win of Pittsburgh over Ohio State and Alabama’s 17–7 defeat OF Georgia. Football Is an unpredictable business and this is as good q place as any to mention our Saturday prediction record. We picked 28 winners, had 8 los ers and / tie for q seasons total
