WILDCATS TRAMPLE ECTC. SO TO o Most Teams Play Loop Tits college Football Saturday Roundup | Saturday Roundup NEW YORK, Oct. II IN The nations leading college football tear.s are playing in their own leagues this week aft er the customary early season encounters with opponents from distant points. And, strangely enough, the indications are that most Of them will find their tasks fairly easy. From the East’s Ivy League to the Pacific Coast Conference, the games that get the top bill ing involve members of the same circuit. But in almost every case the team that has been built up as a coming champ encounters a rival whose reputation already has been slightly furnished. The most notable exceptions probably are Vanderbilt VS. Kentucky, a meeting of two sur prise teams, and Kansas VS.. Oklahoma with the Texas–Arkansas tussle at Memphis, Tenn, running close behind. Vanderbilt wasn’t given much of a tumble in preseason ratings of the Southeastern Conference, but it already has whipped Northwestern, Ala bama and Mississippi and shares the Conference lead with equally = unher aided Georgia Tech. Kentucky, supposedly building for the future, dropped it’s opener to Mississippi then popped up with three straight victories, including a 26–0 decision over Georgia. Kansas and Oklahoma were named as probable contenders for the Big Six tit’e . ‘hev still are although Oklahoma took a 34–14 humping from Tex as last week md Kansas played a scoreless opener against Tex as Christian. Texas, riding high after four decisive victories over non-conference foes, plays it’s first league game against Arkansas, which was figured as Rice’s leading rival for the title before the season began. Arkansas dropped it’s first conference game to the surprising Baylor Bears last week. On the other side, mighty Michigan, chosen by an over whelming vote as the nations No. l team this week, starts it’s bid for the Big Nine Title against twice-beaten Northwest ern. Illinois, the Rose Bowl champ, played a scoreless tie against Army last week and now encounters a victorious but defensively weak Minnesota team. Notre Dame, the other Midwestern powerhouse, takes on Nebraska, which has lost twice. The East’s Big Three, Army, Pennsylvania and Penn State, all should have it easy. Army seeks its 32nd straight game without a loss against Virginia Tech; Penn meets beaten and injury-riddled Columbia and Penn State faces a weak SYRIA cuse club. Yale, after two Ivy League triumphs, faces Wisconsin, which took a drubbing from California. In the south, unbeaten Georgia Tech plays Auburn and Will liam and Mary, southern con ference leader, NETS North Car DINA, the preseason favorite which has had nothing but trou- BILE, climaxed by the still I’M settled question of Charley JUS tees eligibility. Alabama VS.. Tennessee, ordinarily one of the seasons big games, is just an other. clash between twice-beaten- teams. California, which bounced up from nowhere to become the Pacific Coast Conference favorite, meets Washington State in its first league game. The Cougars haven’t beaten anyone by Idaho. Last years winner, U. C.L.A., meets Stanford and highly-regarded Southern Cali fornia plays Oregon State. Utah, top team in the Rocky Mountain Big Seven, faces Den yer. Other major games from coast to coast include Navy Cornell, Holy Cross-Harvard, Brown = Dartmouth, Colgate Princeton and Purdue-Boston University in the East; Mississippi-Tulane, Florida = North Carolina State, Duke-M Maryland, Washington and Lee-Virginia and Duquesne Mississippi State in the South; Iowa-Ohio State, Pittsburgh : Indiana, Kansas ~State-Missouri, Iowa State Michigan State and San Fran cisco-Marquette in the Mid
