Perfect Passer HELPS Illinois 10 Smash Minnesota, 40–13 CHAMPAIGN, ILL.,, Oct. 18.-Perry Moss completed seven passes in seven tosses today-two of them spiraling to long touchdowns-as Illinois crushed Minnesota 40–13. The ponderous Gophers, entering the important Big Nine game with a string of three victories, suffered their first defeat of the season before a wildly cheering partisan crowd of 56,048. 1t was the worst lacing Minnesota had received from Illinois in the 18-game rivalry between the two schools which began in 1898. In remaining undefeated in four games, the Illini cracked the Gopher beef trust” by drilling through line which had a weight advantage up to 81 pounds a man and striking through the air against a pass defense that was nil The Gophers’ slowness afoot enabled Moss, the migrant from Tulsa University, to hurl a 25-yard scoring pass to Dwight Eddleman and then follow up with a 54-yard aerial play to Art Dufelmeier for two touch downs in the first period. Both receivers were completely in the clear after outrunning the Minnesota detenders. The Gophers, resorting to power plays which made Coach Bernie Bierman famous, ranmed so yards for touchdown at the outset of the second quarter. During the march, Bill Elliott, 20 = year old fullback from Minneapolis st. Thomas High School, knitted through for 40 of the total yards and capped the effort by smashing over from the six. ing for a yard after the Deacons rolled 81 yards on the ground and the other by going over his own right tackle for four yards. Bill Gregus passed to Jim Duncan ior 81 yards to the four to make Sprcck’ S touchdown possible. George WaShlngton’S turthermoSt advances after it’s touchdown were to the Wake Forest 36-yard line with Howard Williams first-down passes to Merle Leisher and Stan Burak leading the way and desperation Butler to Close pass to the IL at the halftime gun. But Cavallo took over the passing at this point and Boyd Allen intercepted Cavallo’s first attempt. The Colonials came within Deacon tackler of scoring in the final minutes when Jimmy Kline sped Al yards to midfield with a kickoff return but Gene Piambianchi, the only man between Kline and the goal, caught him. The score might have been larger had it not been for the excellent punting of G. W.’s Bill Spangler who punted and quick-kicked for a 38-yard average on II boots despite making only one yard on a blocked kick. Tackles Harvey Ship man and Carl Butkus of the Co. lonials stood out on the line.
