the honor guests But unfortunately, through, some slip-up, the news release concerning the banquet failed to reach me One of the finest things that has ever been done for the youth of Washington County was the forming of this Junior Baseball League and l sincerely hope that it will function next year bigger and better than ever. Received the following letter from Oren L. Sterling, president of the Hagerstown Baseball Club, ON Tues day: VERY glad to receive your letter of the 9th. | have had several OPP portunities 20 sell my franchise (goood money tool but have turned them all down and have no idea of selling, or taking my franchise out of Hagerstown. 81 have not had an offer from the White Sox-the White Sox do not have farm system, though they will no doubt have to get one since the Washington Senators have decided to do so did you hear that our friend Dutch” Dorman has been made as sistant to Mr. jenkins, the head of the Boston Braves farm system? a nice advancement for him. Had a letter from Julian Morgan from Ia coma, Washington, where he pitched this summer, winning u and losing the same number. He is also work ing in Tacoma this winter Also had letter from Arthur Red” Dwyer, advising that he had good year at Rock Hill Yours very truly, The above should put an end to the rumors that the Owls will have a new owner next year, | also noticed that Mr. Sterling has joined the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce, his application for mem bership being received during the current new member drive being put on by the Chamber. Football While Eddie Semler’s Maroon and Gray squad deserves all the credit in the world for taking the measure of Allegany High at the Stadium on Friday night, there’s also plenty of credit due the Allegany squad as well. AS a matter of fact, Allegany had far the better line and this was pretty clearly demonstrated in the first quarter, when Allegany, ON fourth down, deep in their own ter ritory and needing a yard or more for first down, made no attempt to kick, but just bucked their way through for the necessary yardage. Allegany twice completely out witted the Hagerstown squad with their spread formation play and they also worked the naked” reverse to perfection The speed and broken field running of Early was the diff ference between the two teams. The Maroon and Gray have fine offensive team, but on the defensive side there is plenty of room for inn provement, and when they run into a team whose play and speed on offense equals their own, they will find that a strong defense will be just as important-perhaps more so than the always publicized strong offenSe The Navy, having at long last broken their losing streak with a 14–14 tie against Duke on Saturday, will probably be a different team from now on. Wonder what the Notre Dame fans and they are legion-think of the experts placing Michigan on top of the heap this week? l heard one rabid Notre Dam fan remark: “Sure Michigan smothered Pittsburgh on Saturday, SO to 0. Didn’t Notre Dame soften up Pittsburgh for them the week before?” If both Michigan and Notre Dame go through the season undefeated, the argument concerning their relative strength will be heard long and loud around the “Hot Stove” leagues, since the two teams are not scheduled to meet each other-that is

Terps’ Gambino Lead! U. 5. Scorers; Faces |Biq Test in Duke Not only is the University of Maryland’s Lu Gambino the lead ing scorer in the Southern Confer ence, but he is the Nations top point maker, according to the Ma tional Collegiate Athletic Bureau, which keeps statistics for the country’s 125 major teams. Gambino’s two touchdowns against Richmond last week raised his point total to 48 in three games. Close behind are Doak Walker of South ern Methodist, A. and Byron Gill lory, Texas, and Mike Kaysserian, Detroit, each with SO. Has Gained 402 Yards. Six of Gambinos scores were by rushing, another was by pass receiving and another with a runback of kickoff. He’s also passed to one score. which doesn’t count as a touchdown for him. In Maryland’s S three games he’s had his hand on the ball only 30 times and has gained q total of 402 yards. A real test of Gambino’s ability comes uo Saturday when the unbeaten Terrapins invade Durham, N. c., for a Southern Conference game against Duke, unbeaten but tied by Navy. Lu came out of last Friday nights game in good shape, but his running mate at the other halfback post, Hubie Werner, was injured and Coach Jim Tatum is worried about whether he’ll be able to play. Werner hasn’t scored yet, but he’s gained all sorts of yardage and Is due to break out in rash Of touchdowns at any time. Duke Likely Favorite. Duke beat North Carolina State, TO, and Tennessee, 1877, before last weeks 14–14 tie with Navy, and probably will be favored over the Terrapins. George Barkley, who has been scouting Duke for Maryland, reports that Coach Wallace Wade has a great defensive team and a great kicker in Fred Folger. The Blue Devils can kick and wait for the breaks, he said. Barkley reports the Dukes are especially good all the way across in the line, with the tackles big and rangy and top reserves in the guard spots. Outstanding scoring threats are Buddy Mulligan and George Clark, the latter an All-America candidate last year who. this season is just beginning to get going good. Mulligan particularly is a threat as pass receiver and on reverse plays where his speed comes in handy. The teams passing attack is clicking as shown by the 10 competitions in Is attempts against Navy.
