Last year the unbeaten but Army-tied Irish gave up four touchdowns, but Art Haverstock’s point after touchdown placement yesterday was the first extra point mark ed up against the Irish in two seasons. Other teams to retain their top rating include Texas, Georgia Tech, Pennsylvania, California and Vanderbilt. The Longhorns, paced by pitchin’ Bobby Layne, defeated Oklahoma 34–14 in the widest contest of their 41-game series. Layne figured in all his teams scoring, completing eight passes of II for 129 yards. The game was punctuated by arguments among the players, fights among the fans, and pop-bottle throwing by the spectators. Georgia Tech and surprising Vanderbilt moved to the head oil the Southeastern Conference class as the unbeaten Yellow Jackets scored a 200 victory over Virginia Military Institute and the Commodores won 6 stirring 1916 battle from hitherto undefeated Mississippi. BIG GAMES SCHEDULED AT WEEKEND NEW YORK, Oct 14.-tR-With each succeeding Saturday in this dizzy football season it looks more and mere like Fritz Crisler, who turned down the coaching job at Califcrnla, and Lynn Waldorf, who didn’t, will be looking across the field at each other in Pasadena on New Years Day. When California went looking tor a new coach at the end of a 1946 season in which the Golden Bears won only two games, Crisler was the No. l choice. But Crisler took one look at his prospective Wolverine roster and elected to stay at Michigan. Waldorf, who gave up a comfort able position at Northwestern and took tl.e California post on which Crisler turned his back, returned to the Big Nine country last Satur- day and sent his now-ferocious Bears wltziirg through Wisconsin to the tune of 48–7. Fourth Triumph That was the fourth triumph in four starts for California. Michigan, meanwhile, flattened Pittsburgh, 69-O, for it’s third straighe one-sided conference win. While Michigan and California were winning with ease last week, such other powers as Notre Dame, Texas and Georgia Tech were more or less hard pressed to keep their records clean. Notre Dame relied on the passing of Johnny Lujack to turn back stubborn Purdue, 11–7. Texas bank ed chiefly on Bobby Layne’s throw ing arm fer a 34–14 triumph over an Oklahoma team that covered 263 yards on the ground. And Geor- gia Tech found VIII tough to take 200. Majors In Good Sailing By the tuck of the draw, all five major. unkeaten and united clubs appear to have smooth sailing ahead this week as the accent swings more to conference play with important tests carded in ev- cry loon.
