Triumph Over Texas Makes Rice S NeeIy Top-Notch Prophet HOUSTON, Tex, Oct. 28.-The only time within the knowledge of the sports writer’s that taciturn Jess Nicely ever issued an optimistic statement about his football squad came last September. IT will have the greatest team I ever coached” the tall Rice mentor said. He tempered 1t with, But everybody else is going to have a great team. too” Yet the fact that silent Jess went that far-and the knowledge that he has had some mighty fine elevems in “a years of coaching-should have cushioned the boys for what happened Saturday when Rice out played mighty Texas, the team they all picked not only to win the Southwest Conference champion ship but to go through undefeated. Rice beat Texas, 1913, and even Texas adherents admitted it was an artistic trouncing. Nicely has been doing things with football predictions in the South west ever since 1910. when he was hired as Rice coach after his Glenn son team defeated Boston College In the Cotton Bowl. Whether he had good material or not Jess fashioned ground game that became the terror of the conference. He might be beaten badly in September, but down the stretch he always had a team that either was ranked as the best or as good ‘as any eleven in the league. Neely is one coach who hasn’t been on the spot in this conference, although he hasn’t won cham pionsbip. In 1943. when he had his worst sseason, winning only three games and losing to Texas, $50, Rice trustees voted him a new contract of five years-and that before his first contract had expired. Jess reticence usually is the despair of the sports writer’s. He tells them to just figure out for themselves what his team will do. Thus it was something of shock this year when he said he would have his greatest team.

Texas, the even icy said vas destined for a national niche, fell Saturday and the crash rocked the staid university to its found atoms. Jess Neeley’s Rice Owls, who didn’t take any stock in what they read in the papers, outplayed the Longhorns for an 1913 victory, leaving the conference without an undefeated team over the season route and trimming the unbeaten to two in the title ace. And as Rice punctured Texas dreams, the Texas Agoies roared mighty down the comeback trail A. and NJ, whici. couldn’t bea’ anybody three weeks ago, pushed Bayloa’s Bears into oblivion 17-( as a new star was born. All the Aggies needed was c passer and they found one Satur day. He was Burly Batty. a fresh man star of 1912 who went through a lot of combat in World War II ano returned to Aggieland this yeal to see little .erv’”o because o an injury-that is, until Saturday Then Batty got his chance and h, delivered with nine pass com pletions for IS yards that brough the Aggies two touchdowAs. Rice and A. and M. now leat the conference with two touch downs apiece.
