NAVY and DUKE EVENLY MATCHED Both Teams Boast A 5 Team Squad; Duke Unscored On BALTIMORE, Oct. 4.-lF-Navy and Duke, two Of t h e nation S ‘‘hottest’ undefeated football teams, are ready to take off the wraps and shoot the works in Bal timore Stadium Saturday night to show $4,000 fans just what each has been hiding-if anything-bemeath its first five teams. When contracts were signed for three-game series between the Middes and Blue Devils, no one knew that the first meeting of the clubs since 1880 would produce a gridiron natural before $4,000 sell-out crowd. at the rate tickets were going today. Actually, it appears a toss-up and take your choice, in the first real test for well-fortified Navy and for the Durham dynamiters. losers to the Sailors in three of four previous meetings. Capt. John E. (Billick) Whe1ch- Ell, Navy mentor, reportshis potent squad in top shape after its easy 46–7 triumph over Cornell. but he doesn’t know how ths Mid dies will react when real heat is turned on. In blasting the North Carolina pre-flight Cloudbusters, $40, and again in the Cornell walk, Navy first stringers saw a total of exactly % minutes and five seconds of play. Whelchel even used his second string sparingly in the Cor fourth elevens bearing the brunt. nell battle with his third and Duke has moved down three opponents without taking deep breath, the Blue Devils V-12-inoculated powerhouse rolling up 143 points in shutting out the Camp Lejeune Marines, Richmond uni versity and the N. C. pre-flight Cloudbusters. Duke won 42–0 over the Cloud busters, III points more than Navy, but Coach Eddie Cameron used the Devils best bets most of the way. Navy’s first string played only 10 minutes, 20 seconds by comparison. Likewise. the Middies had the best of it defensively, allowing the pre-flighters no closer than h e midfield stripe. whereas the Cloud busters dug into Duke territory time and again and even rushed over one score that was called back. Whatever the answer, it will come up Saturday night, because neither team will leave Baltimore stadium without exploding we’ll preserved tricks.
