Southern California Is Beaten SoundIy By Tulane, lib Touted Far West Team Slow; Reserves ToIIy To Prevent Shutout LOS ANGELES. Sept. 26.-Southern California, generally rated in the preseason reckoning as one of the two best teams on the Pacific Coast, took a sound beating today at the hands of Tulane, n to 13. The Greenies exploded two quick touchdowns in the second period against a slow Trojan line that was outcharged most of the way and continued the assault in the THIRD quarter with two more. Trailing by 27–0 as the final stanza started, the Trojans yanked out theil regular backfeld and a new COM bination found weakness in the Green Waves line for two touch downs. The Trojans’ greatly publicized sophomore backs Mickey McCardle and Hal Finney. did lot of run ming, but most Of it was lateral as the alert Tulane defense stalked their every move. Tulane had the two outstanding backs, Jim Ely and Lou Thomas They worked smoothly behind we’ll knit and hard-driving interference and teamed up as good passing combination. 1t was a most disappointing debut for the new S. c. coach, jeff Cravath. who started fall practic. with tackle problem and finished today’s game with it still on his hands. Coach Monk Simons showed As 900 spectators a team that was grounded thoroughly in the rudiments OF the game, even at this early stage of the season.
