NOT SMOOTH TEAM IN 21–12 TRIUMPH Shows Flashes of Terrific Drive Against Fighting Dixie GridderS. 2.-The southern CaII1OILIId l. University foot ball team that defeated Tulane, Il to IL. in the annual Rose Bowl game at Pasadena to win the mythical national championship, was many degrees removed from the smooth working and powerful combinaton that stopped the Notre Dame victory march and slaughtered a half dozen other good teams along the seasons march. But the TrojanS were able to show brief flashes of their terrific power, ana once the Juggernaut was under way IL took but little time for Southern Can fornia to score. In making their nrSI touchdown the Trojans drove 90 yaroS on five plays. They came back 70 travel SO yards on five plays for sec ond touchdown. and pushed the third across on a 28-yard charge that consumed three plays. Tulane, with a fghting and last team, was physically unable to matt the r1ower-house rushes of Ernie Ptnckert and Ray Sparkling, who BOWED over safety men as If they were duckpins. Pinckert’s two touchdownS were scored on simple reverses around Tulane’S right END. and on both of the scoring runs Jerry Dalrymple, the Green’s an-American. was cut down by Johnny Baker, the powerful running guard. who again PLAYED tremendous foot ball and was every inch an all-American. Shaver in Big Role. Two of Southern Californias scores followed iashy returns OF puns py Gaius Shaver, but the other came after Don Zimmerman, Tulane’S great back, had fumbled in returning a Eick-on ON those scoring drives Southern Cali fornia’s big line put on real offensive charge, and the interference moppeo cleanly for the ball carriers. The re mainder of the time the TroJan’s play was inclined to be loose and ragged. Tulane, picked as an easy victim for the big Trojans, made a great nght’ out lacked the power fors sustained gained more ground than the Trolans and. but for several mishapS, might have won the game. Don thinner mans poor ball handling was the mann fault in the Tulane play. His fumole of the kickoff was tragic to the Tulane hopes, and he fumbled at several other critical times. Tulane had banked heavily on its forward-pass attack to score, but elect ed to attempt the wrong sort OF passes Zimmerman throughout the early part Of the game was attempting long passes. In passing, he drifted too deep and reld his pass so long that Shaver, Pinckert and Mallory we’re able to catch up with the receivers. Late In the game Zimmerman switched 10 short fat passes and made his aerial game work. Lack Driving Fullback. Had the Southerners possessed more power at fullback, they would have gained more heavily at straight foot ball. The TrojanS showed little detensive power between the tackles, and most OF Tulane’s straight power plags gained during the first half. The Green backs were faster than those Of Troy, but on sweeps the Tulane carriers were inclined to run entirely too wide. over the run of the game TulaneS line out charged that of Southern CaInornla’ and IodrigueS, the Green center, was one of the best forwards seen all season !, Terry Dalrymple was the outstano, tng piaver on the Tulane team anu the outstanding player on the nelo: On the defense, Jerry took care OF tne Ito Ian’s weak side almost unaloeo’ al1 his diagnosis of plays was sensatlona. The best individual play OF cne game was made by palrymple when ne leaped stoned Pinckert with beautiful roll hack Dalrymple made another surerb play in the fourth period when ne retrieved Zfmmerman’s pass after u had been tipped by Trojan, ana brought it down on Southern Can1o-nie’s 3-yard line. Wop Glover, the tiny Tulane back, made the most brilliant runs OF the game. In the second period he gal ioped so yards before being pulled down and in the fourth period rambled 80 yards. Had Glover cut 70 the LEFT in stead Of the right on his first long run he might easily have scored, but a wrong turn enabled Mohler and Pine kert to catch him. Glovers second run set up Tulane’s first touchdown, for 1t was followed by a fat pass from Zimmerman to Haynes good for IL yards. On that pass, the Trojans were caught slow-footed. The Line Shift No Puzzle. Southern California’s intricate line SIllIJ OlQ nOL seem 10 puAllS 4uldIle after the first few minutes Of play. The Dixie team played its tackles wide and then permitted the plays to develop. Tulane employed a variation OF the old Minnesota TANKER and line shift and made its running plays work TO the best of its physical ability. Eight of Troy’s great players finished their careers in the game, but the greatest Of them all was Ernie Pinckert. In his %arewel to arms, Pinckert was again a tremendous blocker, a powerful runner and fine defensive player both against runs and passes. Second to him was Gaius Shaver, the versatile back, without whom Southern Californie’s offense would have fallen very fiat. 1t was one of the greatest Of all Rose Bowl games and drew a record crowd of $4,000. If Southern Califor- MAS victory made it the national champion, then Tulane must be ranked second. for the New Orleans team showed more foot ball ability than 1t uas thpyIOht N rNeSpSS
