    |UPSETS FEATURE WEEK END GAMES Northwestern, Minnesota, Michigan, Notre Dame Among Mid West Leaders 0ASA a football weekend that had more Merriwells finishes than the widest movie script and more surprises than your Aunt Emma’s Christmas box, the Middle West emerged today with a hat full of teams clam oring for more than sectional recogmilton. In the Western conference alone are three clubs that must figure in anyone’s national ranking. Each has won a major intersectional VIC tory-Northwestern over Syracuse, Minnesota over Washington, and Michigan over California and yes terday over Penn-and each in addition has cleaned up in its own territory. Besides these the midwest has Notre Dame, still looking for some team to give its first-stringers a Commute workout and hardly like ly to find it in next Saturdays meeting with inept Army, and Detroit, which stayed in the alvin ming ranks by downing V’illanova today, 100. Drop From List While the east was losing Ford ham and Columbia from it’s unbeaten-untied list, Mississippi was knocked off in the south and Tex as in the southwest, the midwest foursome came through impress sively on all counts. Michigan’s meeting with Penn had been headlined in advance as a duel of brilliant individuals. It turned out to be another great show by the Wolverines Tommy Harmon, who ran 10 yards and passed IS yards for the two touchdowns, kicked the extra points and got valuable assists from Bucking Back Bob Westfall and Blocking Back Forest Evashevski as Mich igan smothered Frank Reagan to win, $40. Minnesota and Northwestern, ri walls in next Saturdays major at traction, both came from behind. The Gophers. with George Franck racing to four touchdowns, whipped Iowa, 34–6. Northwestern, with Bill DeCorrevont on the sidelines, in tercepted an Indian pass and blocker a punt in the last quarter to top the Hoosiers, POT. Notre Danes reserves again got a big play in a 26–0 whipping of Illinois. Cornell And Stanford Sectionally the days other stand out performances were delivered by Cornell in the east and Stanford on the Pacific coast. The Ithacans, battered and buffaloed by an 49, yard Ohio State scoring drive early in the first quarter, picked them selves up off the floor to clear their biggest mid-season obstacle with a 21–7 victory, biggest score ever run up on any Francis Schmidt-coached Ohio State team. Stanford, spanked for a change by Quarter back Frank Albert, put over two touchdowns in the last four min utes for a similar count against Southern California, which had won last year by 800. Five other major eastern elevens stayed in the winning column. Navy, which next tackles Penn, rolled Up II first downs to one in wallof Dig Yale, 30, for the first time. Army, on the other hand, dropped a 1910 decision to all-winming Lafayette, which sent Jimmy Farrell over for two TALES in little more than a minute. Georgetown ran its unbeaten streak to 81, five more than Cor nell, with an easi1y-won 26–0 conquest of New York U. Penn States Pepper Petrella was the big noise in an 1870 defeat of Temple.
