JACKSONVILLE. Fla, Dec. G. Especial )-The University of Florida s powerful kicking offensive in the form of the peerless toe of Captain Ark New ton triumphed over the Washington and Lee Generals this afternoon by the score of 16 to 6. Time and again Flor ida would outpunt the Generals. w. & L., running them back within the very shadow of their goal, where they would make some miscue and the fighting Gators would recover for score. The game was bitterly contested, though seemingly somewhat dragged out. due to the exceedingly warm weather which greeted the arrival or both teams in the Gateway City. Both elevens fought to the last. and the Gen, erals from Virginia finally succumbed before the combined weight of the Gators and the famed Florldan weather. Throughout the initial quarter, the Washington and Lee backs seemed to have unusual trouble in grabbing the old pigskin, number of fumbles prov ing to be rather costly. Florida re- ceived the kickoff and Newton imme- diately punted the pigskin back into opposing territory. At every chance possibly throughout the encounter. the brilliant Gator leader punted, driving the Generals back always. Gators Score Early The Gators had two attempts at scoring in the first period, one of them resulting in a field goal for three points. The w. & l.. punter got away bad kick, the ball going bare 20 yards to their own 4O-yard line, Newton return ing 20 yards to the 20-yard line. Cap tain Newton missed an attempt at q placement score, but few minutes later on recovered tumble within the shadow of the Generals goal. He made good his second kickoff for the first score of the game. The Gators kept the ball in their opponents territory during the first quarter. The second period opened with the w. & l.. taking the offensive. series of line bucks end runs and Florida penalties. which eliminated with q buck over the goal line by Cameron, gave the Washington and Lee team their only score of the game. The attempt at goal was missed. Florida followed with another touch down when their opponents got away another bad punt Middlekauf carried the ball over, and the score stood al 10 to 6, Newton having kicked tht goal. The half ended when Newton missed an attempt from the 47-yart line at placement kick. Probably the third quarter might Dc termed q draw, since both elevens made pair of first down each. The period was repetition of the foregoing quar- ters. Newton bunting whenever he got q chance. Coach Nanfleet began to send in his large hosts of subs, every member of his squad playing before the final whistle blew. Florida Scores Again Florida added another touchdown ill the final period when Ark hurled the pigskin on three successive attempts to Owen Pittman for gain of some 1. yards and touchdown. | Ark” Newton, playing his last gam’
