The Crimson Tide of Alabama today rides upon the crest of gridiron waves of the Southland. with predictions free ly being made. that the Tide will con tinue to flow until it engulfs the South ern Conference championship, follow ing Alabamas defeat of the mighty Golden Tornado Saturday, the first time a Tech machine has suffered de- feat by Dixie eleven since 1919. Alabama indeed is resting upon the pinnacle this week. However, the drama of the gridiron IS rapidly moving, and another eleven may usurp the star role as suddenly and as unexpectedly as the Crimson Tide mounted the lad der when they pulled the seemingly im- possible stunt of forcing the great Tor nado to taste the dregs of defeat. There are half dozen or more great elevens looking anxiously toward the top, and they are not having to gaze far. Georgia Strong The Bulldogs of Georgia upset an- other of Saturdays predictions when they stopped the vaunted attack of the Vandy Commodores, and handed the McGugin machine it’s first defeat in their new stadium, 3 to 0. Georgia’s s great battle against Yale, together with Saturdays victory, gives them a fol- lowing practically as strong as that ot Alabama, who believe the Bulldogs will cross the wire in the forefront. At least, the Magic City stands q fine chance of having the championship of the Southern Conference decided within it’s confines when the Bulldog grapples with the Tide on Thanksgiv- ing. Seven other conference teams have not been defeated. and are still in the running for titular honors, although four of these have been forced to be satisfied with drawn battles. Tulane To Be Considered Of this sextet, the Green Wave of Tulane seems to have the best chance to drown out the championship hopes of Alabama and Georgia ere the grid season draws to close, due largely to their victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores. The pity, for Tulane, is that the remainder of her schedule may not be hard enough to give them as good a ranking as the eleven might be due to have. However, the Auburn Tigers are ready to dispute Tulane’s ascendancy with a vim next Saturday week, while the Greenics run into an- other undefeated eleven next Saturday in Mississippi A. & M. Mississippi A. & M. and Virginia have won their conference tilts to date, while Auburn. Washington & Lee, V. P. I. and Florida are undefeated, though tied by opponents. Considering their schedule from now until the end of the season, their per formances thus far, together with the tied conflicts, the critics are probably doping the conference struggle out as follows. right at present. Undoubtedly even next week the scene will be ma ~terially changed. r1 ‘@The Big Trio” Alabama, Georgia and Tulane form the leading trio. The quartet of teams just back of the leaders are Auburn, Mississippi A. & M., Virginia and Flor ida, while Washington & Lee and V. P. I. bring up the rear. Auburn must not be discounted m the race. The Tigers probably have the hardest schedule until Thanksgiv- ing of any conference team, and should they come through successfully, they would have an excellent chance. Missis- sippi A. & NJ. and Virginia have con ference schedules which would rate them high. should they CO. .tinue to win, while Florida has A. & M. and Wash ingtOn & Lee to reckon with.
