AUBURN OUTPLAYS GEORGIA ONLY TO LOSE GAME, 7 TO Q Day InterCepts Auburn Pass And Runs 65 Yards For Touchdown And Victory Hllu nuIlS OO al uo OI Touchdown And Victory COLUMBUS, Ga. Nov. s.-(special) Days 65-yard run to a touchdown on an intercepted forward pass dur ing the closing minutes of the first half gave Georgia a ‘ to victory over the Auburn Plainsmen In their annual clash at the Columbus driving park this afternoon. The game was played on a soggy. slippery field in the first two periods and the en- tire last half was played during a steady driEzle that made the field a sea of mud Auburn’s defeat is shrouded in a song of woe and contempt for the inconsistency of luck. Auburn out played Georgia in every department of the game, except the bunting. Although making 12 first downs to for Georgia, bad break inter- rupted what appeared to be march to the Georgia goal and Harrison’s attempted pass was intercepted by Day, Georgia’s hefty pivot man, who raced his way behind good interfer- ence for 65 yards across the Auburn goal line for the only score of the game. The intercepted pass came after Coach Pitts had fired his pony back field into the scrap In an effort to have them outspeed the tired Geor- gia eleven and probably shove across their own 25-yard line, the “Ponies,” in three plays had advanced the ball by series of dazzling plays to the Georgia 4O-yard line. They were speeding their way off Georgia s tackles with amazing consistency f.1A to Petersen was grabbed by Day. o o O PIainsmen outweished 15 Pounds. The Plainsmen were outwieghed 15 pounds to the man, yet they out played the heavy Georgians at every turn. The slippery field prevented the fast Auburn backs from coming into their own and the element of speed was what Coach Pitts had pinned his chances of victory on. Au- burn showed a better offensive, a better defensive and more versatile play than the Red and Black team and lost through the breaks of the game going against them. Auburn showed sprprising g amount of defensive strength in ad- dition to their dependable offensive ability. On three occasions the Auburn line was impregnable to the powerful rushes of the touted Fletcher, Randall and Fitzpatrick and the ball was taken from the Georgia eleven on downs. Georgia’s double pass formation was smeared on every attempt, the Auburn linesmen charg- ing through and mailing the runner for losses on numerous occasions. The ball, for the most part, stayed between the two 35-yard lines. Geor- gia never threatened the Auburn goal seriously, and Auburn’s large -R l. t.I. fl for her 12 first downs always ended in inglorious fumbles, recovered by Georgia, or by intercepted forward passes, Day intercepted three of Auburn’s aerial attempts for the Res. and Black eleven. Of the four first downs annexed by Georgia during the four fiercely fought periods. one fully executed forward pass, and two from scrimmage. Georgia’s bunting was superb and helped them to keep the Plainsmen out of Georgia terri tory a number of times. Field Wet And Muddy. The slippery condition of the field slowed Auburn’s backs and dissipated their play. It acted the same against Georgia, but the Bulldogs were de- pending more upon their line attack than upon their fleet end circling. Auburn’s margin of superiority over the Georgia team in today’s game was outstanding Their rushes were always threatening and first down after first down was obtained by the alternate off-tackle plays by the en- tire Auburn backfield. Ford. Will Hams and Petersen were the shining lights of the two offensives. They were largely responsible for the l2 first downs gained by the Orange and Blue jerseyed lads. In the Auburn line, Brice, Capt. Reagan, Fatty Law renee and Ollinger were the buiwarks who smeared Georgias offense all over the lot. Fletcher and Randall gained most of the ground for Geor- gia Only a scant number of yards came to the Georgians from scrim- mage, but once or twice their em- powered drives would not be denied. Day at center was the defensive star of the Georgia line. In addition 10 intercepting three of Auburn’s aeriai attempts, he broke up the Plainsmen attack when it was directed at his position consistently. The game was cieanly played ana unmarred by excessive penalties. Only small number Of penalties were called. most of them being TOT offside. The condition or the itsio to spoiled the offensives of the two teams. and the steady rain cast damper on the cheering. The lineup.
