The ground was in such bad condition that long runs were out of the question, and the first half Of the game resolved itself into an exchange of punts by Davies and Brenkert, in the hope that a tumble would give the other side an advantage. This did happen once in the first quarter, when Brenkert fumbled Daviess punt on W. and J.’s 19-yard line, Peters falling on the ball for Pitt However, the great defensive work of Erickson and Basista held the Pan theirs, and Davies was forced to kick. The ball was kept almost entirely in W. and Us territory during the whole Of the first half. Only one first down was made during this time, Winterburn for Pitt making twelve yards through left tackle just before the first quarter ended. The second quarter was entirely without features, as neither side went beyond the third down before punting out. Pitt lost possible chance just before the whistle blew, when, with two yards to go for first down, a bad pass lost five yards and W. and ]. recovered the ball on their own 20-yard line. The third period was devoid of interest until near the close, when Pitt carried the ball dangerously near the w. and ]. goal, but Captain Herb Stein intercept ed forward pass from Davies and ran back fifteen yards, after which a fine run of twenty eight yards by Erickson carried the ball to the Panthers’ Is yard line, when the quarter ended Pitt threw Erickson back for thirteen yards in the first play of the last quarter, but moment later forward pass from Brenkert to Kopf sent the latter over for touchdown. Captain Stein kicked goal, making the score to O, where it remained to the finish, the Presidents playing on the defensive.
