LEGE FOOTBALL TEAMS IN THANKSGIVING DAY BATTLES Pitt Battles Penn State to Sc0reLeSS Tie in Mud On Sloppy Gridron Neither Side Is Able to Show to Adyantage-Fumbles Aplenty as Ball Zig zags Up and Down Field. half. the Pitt ends got down under punts quickly dropping KiIlinger before he had a chance TO advance. The last period opened with the ball in States possession on her own 80 yard line k4llinger tried to hurdle the line at centre, but made only a yard a q Wilson was thrown for n loss on the next play. Kllinger being forced TO punt. In fact he and Davies did n great deal OF punting in the last quarter, each side seeming to realize that long runs were well nigh inposs,b and attempts ut line plunging also ‘‘e. stnte’s Narrow Escape. Pitt came near getting within 10 yards of States goal line when a for ward pass from Davies intended for Ho’leran. who was all set. was intercepted by Reddnger, who leaped out in front of Hoicran and took the ball out OF the air. This undoubtedly averted danger for the Blue and White. ater in this period Wilson did practically the same thing when he clutched a for ward pass from Davies 10 Winterburn. although much further away from States goal line. Big “riny” Hewitt was sent in at the last moment in place of Colonna. who had borne the burden of the line smash ing, but the change did not help as Hewitt was guilty of his old fault OF fumbling at critical times. Both teams We’re fighting desperately as darkness gathered over the field. and the referees whistle ended the scoreless contest with out either side showing what might be called an advantage. II was Pitts best game of the year. and they gave more than it’s supporters expected. TIE lineiIp:

Schedule Played By Nittany Lions TOug hest of All Tie Games With Harvard and Pitt Still Leave Penn State Leading the East. The inability Of Penn State TO get better than a tie against Pittsburg in the Thanksgiving day game was a surprise and then again It wasn’t. The Penn State team unQuestionably had gone stale. In addition, the muddy field made It impossible for the fast Penn backs TO show TO advantage. A lot Of the football experts had the proper dope on State when they gave Pittsburg an outside chance TO win. and predicted the game would be decided by a close score either way. Penn State is the best team in the east, despite the fact that II was able to get nothing better than a tie with Pittsburg, a team that has been beaten several times during the season. doubt IL any football team in the country ever attempted a harder schedule than Penn State faced this year Seven straight games. all Of them against strong elevens. was the task that Coach Hugo Bezdek was up against. First came North Carolina State, very fair team. Then came the always troublesome Lehigh eleven. In rapid order followed Harvard, Georgia Tech. Carnegie Tech. Navy and Pittsburg. Penn State was at the top OF its game against the Navy. when il played its greatest exhibition and decisively defeated the great Navy eleven. The team undoubtedly was a bit stale against Pitt, and this state ment does not detract in any way from the great comeback made by Warmers eleven. Supporters OF Lafayette, Cornell and others may question the superiority of Penn State, but most critics will give the team the credit IL deserves.
