EEETS ENSLEY THIS MORNING FLORIDA UPSETS DOPE AND BEATS ALABAMA, 9 TO 2 Five Thousand Fans See CrlmSOnS Go Down in Third Defeat of Year Tive thousand spectators saw the University of Florida upset the dope nd defeat the Alabama Crimson tide his afternoon by the score of to 2. he Crtmsons seemed sadly off color tnd did not play with the vim and dash that characterized their work in the l.. s. |. and Vandy games and were utterly unable to cope with the gigantic forwards of the Alligators. Indeed, the Florida line was the heav- lest that has ever appeared on Denny field. Florida got away to q quick start. scoring touchdown Tn the first quar- ter and 1t seemed as If the tide would be swamped with counters. After twice exchanging punts Florida found the ball in her possession on the 4S- yard line. Newton started the fireworks by gouging left tackle for 10 yards and first down. Duncan garnered seven in two attempts at right tackle. Newton made five at left guard and first down. Duncan then hit right guard for two more Newton scam pered around left end for three more. Then Newton made another first down with six yards off tackle. Carl ton then annexed five around left end Newton completed the work by negotiating the remaining l2 yards for touchdown Newton failed to kick the goal. AInbamn’s Counter Alabama’s counter came as the re- suit of blocked punt in the third period. Newton dropped back to his own goal line to punt. His punt was low, striking one of the Alabama players and hopped 10 yards behind the goal line. N. Stanley falling on the ball for a safety. Florida scored The Allgators scored their last in the early part of the fourth, when, after failing to gain in three downs, Duncan. standing on Aiabama’s 20- yard line, booted the ball between the uprights for a field goal Capt. Al Clemens and Shorty Cooper, Wesley and Newton were the defensive stars for the tide. They broke through Into the back lot of ;he Gators and spilled the ball toters for painful losses Captain Clemens was also fiend at going down under the punts and mailing the receiving back in his shoes. Bartlett was the outstanding offensive star for Bama, though Baty, Rosenfeld and l.. Thomas were good Bartlett fur nished the sensation of the game, when he tore loose around left end for 30 yards in the second quarter. He also got off his punts for nice average and passed well. Baty and Lester Thomas were good at bucking the line. Thomas got in some good licks at backing up the line while he was on the receiving end of two passes from Bartlett in the third period, one being good for 12 yards while the last was good for 20. Whole Gator Team Good The entire Gator line played steady consistent football, but the work of Captain Perry at right guard and Swanson furnished the high lights of the reptiles. Robinson, at left tackle, was also good. The Gator backfield was a terror and packs the most weight of any aggregation of almost any crew in the south as does their line. Duncan, the giant fullback, was good for gam at almost every attempt and ripped off gain after gain. Newton, besides playing nifty role as ball lugger. got off some of the most wicked spirals ever seen on Denny field, some of them going for 50 yards while he averaged 40. Stanley. at quarter, was good at ad- yancing the ball while running the the spectators thrill twice by get ting away for 15 yards. He got loose. It is wondered on the Alabama cam pus how the southern teams can play the Gators next year without tremulous feeling of defeat staring them In the face, for with season s experience under their belts these boys should rank with the first of them next season. The Alligators certainly spilled the beans for the Bama packers and especially the old grads, who had re- turned to see the tide and expected them to cop. It is the opinion of Coach Scott, as well as of the spectators who viewed the scrap that Bama did not play the ball she was capable of do- ing. Although they came back in the second half and played the Ga- tors to a standstill, yet they could not score even after opening up a fast overhead attack. Alabama’s most promising chance to count came in the third period. With Alabama coming back strong, Baty opened up with passes from the 4o-yard line. Here 8 pass from Bart lett to Thomas netted 12 yards: Bart ‘ ltLL lHtn 6HdlCHtd OlI liN0 dIOuHu right end. Another pass from Bart lett to Thomas annexed 20 yards more and first down. Baty then gouged center for five yards, placing the ball on Florida’s 25-yard line. Here three passes in succession were incomplete and the ball went over and Newton kicked out of danger. Alabama did not play the game she was capable of doing. seemingly. But if the tide would take the measure of the Georgia Bulldog in Atlanta next Saturday she will have to be wide awake. Despite the fact that Bama lost. the student body is staging a shirt tail parade through town tonight and behaving as though they had won. Just another instance of Alabama spirit. An added feature of the game was the presence of camera man repre- senting the Harcol Film company of New Orleans, who took views of the clash between the halves and during the second half.
