Yale BEATS BATES, $50, ON GRIDIR0N Twelve Thousand Witness Opening Game of the Sea- son in Ellis Bowl. ALDRICH’S 40 YARDS RUN Maine Collegians Unable to Cope With the Powerful Blue Line. @SHPoseb New HAVEN. Conn, Sept. 24,-In beat Ing Bates % to o In the sweltering heat this afternoon, Yale played a pretty fair first game. Two fumbles by the Maine men gave Yale chances which they took advantage of and quickly turned those opportunities into touchdowns. Bates came here having only had two scrim- IMAGES this season and played a plucky, hard gone, but their backs could do nothing against YaIes set of forwards. Bates made but one first down and that came late in the fourth period. Earlier In the game she worked one good for ward pass for nine yard gain. but was held finally for downs. Yale’s work grew better as the game wore on. At the opening the backs found 1t hard to make much Of a dent against the Bates line and they were wild in two attempts at forward passing. each grounding. Last year Harvard beat Bates, which had nearly the same team, 54 to 0. Capt. Aldrich and Jordan were the PRINCIPAL ground gamers for Yale, but in the final period. Wight and Neidlinger tore loose from the Maine tacklers and made long runs. the former one OF fifty yards from kickoff and the latter a run of thirtveight yards on a Dash around Bates’s left end for touchdown. Nefdlipger was taken out soon after this play. The Yale line held waIl ~ ali and, as was forecasted, the Ell backs were fast. The Blue in all probability will have one Of the best back fields II has had in years, and IL the line can be developed to hold a stronger team, some of Tad Jones’s worries will 60 up the chimney. Only Two First String Men. or the Yale team to take the field to-day at the start of the game but two men. Aldrich and Into, the big tackle were first string varsity men on Tim Callahan’e team year ago. Callahan has watched the game from the press stand, having returned from Oxford, where he spent several months in study. He will go into business In New York. One of the best plays In the first period was a thirty yard run around Bates’s left end by Aldrich after receiving Moulton’s kick. Steady plunges by Aldrich. Jordan and Mallory brought the ball to the s-yard line, but the usual Yale punch was lacking and Bates held for downs. Moulton plunged through Trippe for two yards and on the next play Davis funibled the ball on a centre play and Aldrich recovered II on Batess 10-yard line. Aldrich hit Price for two yards and Jordan circled right end for seven yards In the next play Jordan dived over Ross for Yale’s first 1921 touchdown. Aldrich zigzagged his way for thirty five yards around Bates’s left end on a fake kick in the middle of the third period for the best run Of the period. He placed the ball on the 44-yard line, from which point the Ellis bucked their way to another touchdown. AIdrich max ing the score. A forward pass Murphy to Mallory. for a ten yard gain helped in the advance. Dynamite” Plays Well. Several sub backs were sent in soon afterward and all did good work. “Dynamite” Murphy, who played the whole game at quarter. was a sure handler of punts and ran well after catching them. He is making strong bid for the place generally conceded to Charlie O’Hearn. who. with Mackay, Quaile and Cross. is laid up. A tumble on the 14-yard line in the third period by Bates gave Jordan an other chance for touchdown and he made It after three plunges through tackle Neidlinger’s touchdown in the final period was the final score, although the game ended with the ball in Yales pos session on Bates’s t-yard line. About 10000 persons watched the game. The lineup: Yale. Bates
