YALE WAKES UP AND BEATS VERMONT 14-O With o ScOreless First Half the Ellis Rip Up Visitors Forwards in Second. Special Despatch to TIE NEW York HERALD. NEW HAVEN, Conn, Oct Finding themselves in the second hals after being played to a standstill during the first two periods. the Yale football players downed Vermont in the final quarter to-day and won. IA to 0. The Vermont ers came here with well coached eleven In the care of Tom Ready and pulled themselves out of some deep holes in the first and second periods. Four times Yale had the ball inside OF the Is yard l!ne but the Ell punch was lacking. and each time Vermont got out of trouble. Brock was compelled to kick from behind his own goal line three times. Two kicks by Capt. Aldrich proved lucky ones for Yale In the early part of the game. Gooch, the quarter back. allowed one to roll out of bounds half foot from the corner. and the other drop kick, went out two yards from the corner of the field. Aidrich tried three goals from the held and missed each time. and Oed, the substitute quarterback. failed on the two. The Yale backield did fine work in the second half; that is, two-thiirds OF the backfed did Mallory, the right halfback. played through three and a half periods and was not given the ball once. Jordan and Aldrich did practically all the running with the ball. Oed occasionally varying the play with a quarterback run or by giving the ball to an Eli end. Yales experimental team held the Vermonters to a Single first down. The line ripped up the Vermont for wards In the second half and made It easy for Aldrich and Jordan to plough their way down field. II was a case of the Vermont team playing itself out in the first half, with no reserve TO fall back on Yale tried eight forward passes and only two were successful for gain of 10 yards. Vermont tried four and were successful twice. Yale stuck mostly to a lire bucking game and something resembling the old Yale puch was uncovered In the third quarter. With scoreless first half behind them. Yale wasn’t long in getting started when the teams took the field again. An exchange of punts found the ball in Aldrich’s arms on his 3S yard line An off side play set Vermont back five yards and then march down the field began which resulted in a touchdown by Aid rich. Jordan and Adrich. on plunges | between Margolski and Nolan and inside | of Semansky. clipped off yard after yard. Oed found the left side of Vermont line weak and played his backs | against 1t on almost every down Steady | hammering at this side was good busi. | ness and nothing could stop the Yale | backs. Aldrichs touch down was made | in dash between left end and tackle. | Getting the kick off, Oed ran the bal to Yale’s 30 yard line. Aldrich and Jor | dan advancing 1t TO the SO yard line | when the third quarter ended. The first play. in the fourth period was an eight yard run by Aldrich. Jor dan squirmed through to the 80 yart line and Aldrich made it first down O, the % yard line. Jordan got 10 and sooi afterward jammed his way through TO another first down on the yard line The Vermont line frightened and hell for two downs but on the third Oe’ worked his way over for a score. Eli Football Outlook Not Over Bright Up at the Yale bowl in New Ha- ven, Saturday afternoon, the grand old dope ran true to form when Yale downed Vermont by a score of 14 to 0. Followers of the gridiron sport had picked Yale to win, but predicted that the contest would not be a. walk over such as the Bates game a week ago. Such proved to be the case. Yale triumphed but it wasn’t a joy ride for the Blue machine by long shot. Vermont, although not listed prom inently among the major elevens, was reported to have a scrappy football outfit, and the Green Mountain boys certainly looked formidable during the first half During the first two per, iods Yale backs plunged time and again against the dark green forward line of the Vermonters, only to be piled up in a hopeless tangle that yielded little or no gain. Vermont was equally helpless on line plunges, Yale made two and Vermont one first down during the first half. After the intermission, however, the Yale backf1eld seemed to gather itself, and the old fashioned line ten first downs. The Eli attack was directed continually against the Yer mont left wing, and this continuous attack served it’s purpose in wearing down the defense. Vermont simply lacked the reserve power to with stand these repeated attacks. Little Improvement. If Saturdays game is to be taken as a criterion Yale has not advanced a great day over last years form. Very few end runs were attempted. and the line battering game was ter ribly upset during the first period while Vermont was strong. In the second half of course, these smashes worked nicely, but it is a question whether a Harvard or Princeton line could be penetrated as easily. The forward passing of both teams was nothing to shout about. Yale worked only two successful aerial flights out of eight tries. for a total gain of 19 yards, and Vermont was successful in two out of four attempts The average favored the visitors. Ii is evident that Yale must buck up on it’s passing game. Drop kicking was all on the Yale side, and it was truly a joke. Twice the ball was planted within easy striking distance of the Vermont goal posts, and both times the ball barely cleared the top of the forward lines Vermont broke through once and completely blocked a kick. In summary it might be said, that Yale’s best efforts are still in the all there is to it. One expects to see straight football and is not <disap- pointed With ‘‘Fido’‘ Ke1l1pton gone, even the hope of specta cular dash seems TO have disappeared. One man does not stand out individually above his team mates as paricul1 star and the Yale stands simply must wait and hope for the best from the old time game of hitting the line.

Aock Wins ae Grace Handicap Title YALE IS HARD PRESSED TO WIN OVER VERMONT NEW HAVEN. Conn. October L. Yale showed but few flashes of brilliant foot ball in the game with University of Vermont this afternoon, winning by the score of II to 0. The Green Mountain eleven proved to be particularly strong in the line and this strength was evidenced in the first half. in which the Blue failed to score and hardly threatened the Vermont goal. Yale tried four goals from the field. but they were unsuccessful and few of the forward passes attempted resuited in gains. One which Aldrich threw was struck in midafr by Gooch and Deaver grabbed it before il res ched the ground, netting 25-yard advance for Yale. Aldrich and Jordan did most of the ground gaining for the Ellis, while Gooch was the star for Vermont on both attack and defense Summary:
