Lehigh Holds Penn State to Draw at Z to Z Brown and White Grew Out play Heavier Upstate Ri walls III Royal Battle with the tgS.ing listle Iehigh eleven here this afternoon. For three periods and t,ve minutes the plucky brown and White crew, outweighed fifteen pounds man, oatfought and outpiayed its up state rivals. 1t had scored “a touchdown and had narrowly missed getting field goal. Then, with only two minutes to go and the tally TO 0 against them, the State players threw all caution to the winds and with series Of forward passes and end runs marched to “a touchdown and u tie at IT, For the first two periods the two teams swayed back and forth in death-hke grip without either side gaining the advantage. The half ended with the score to O. Expected Fails to Happen And then came the third period and the Penn State stalwarts trotted onto the field. stamping up and down with fre IN their eyes, as much as to say: “Well make mince meat of those midgets this half” But no such thing happened. The period had hardly been started when State. unable to gain, kicked to the Tiny Rote, who had Just entered the fray. Immediately the locals opened up a dazzling display of for ward passes and end runs. After gain ing first down Rote, on the dead run, shot forward pass to bis equally prohclent n, teammate and captain, Buzz Harrington, who had sifted through the lines and was running alone ahead of the swirling mass. The Lehigh captain turned. took the pass while on the run, then side stopped State tackler and set off for the goal line. The pass was made from midfeld and it appeared as though Harrington would surely make the line, as nobody was near him. But suddenly, from the side, loomed two State huskies bearing down upon the will-o’-wisp “Buzz” and as he crossed upon him at one time with heavy thud. The three went to the ground as though struck by lightning, but the wlry Harrington rebounded and contlnued to the one-yard line, where he was again struck down.. The teams lined up for further action, State snaring and fighting mad, Lehigh grim and determined to push over touchdown. Savaria hit the line with all the power of his 1862 pounds, but bounded back as though he had ‘‘ie q wall ROIc tueu attempted an end run and was hurled back for Vineyard loss, being swept clean off his feet by the fiery charge of KILN ger. 1t didn’t look like score for Lehigh after that. But on the next play, Rote taking the ball from his CEN ter, ran back a few yards then straight ened and hurled a swift, accurate pass over the middle of the line to Long Hank Gulick, who was standing behind his goal line. Maginnes kicked the gcal and the Lehigh stands went wild Speedy Way Enters Guard Mr.. Bezdek decided that things had gone far enough and promptly sent the speed marvel Way into the game The State mentor had had hopes Of saving this lightweight, who is at pres ent laid up with a wrenched back, but something had to be done if defeat was to be avoided, so Way was uncovered. For five minutes OF the next quarter Lehigh continued to hold back the frenzied warriors of State, who were ball, and who were meeting a bunch of midgets fighting every bit as hard in holding thsm back. Then, with ten minutes to play, Killinger opened up with everything he had or that State possessed. The first pass Killinger threw, which was caught by Haines, netted ten yards, the next on” failed. The next heave Haines picked off another ten yards Smell made three yards off tackle, and Haines CAUGHT another short pass, which gained four more. The next failed, and then came the turning point in the game as far as a tie score concerned, Ordinarily with the ball on his As yard line it would have been good foot ball for Killinger to kick with three yards to go on the fourth down and bad football to attempt to gain. But State was not playing good or bad, it was simply desperate football. When “ man is going down he doesn’t stop to consider the best means of saving himself. Neither did the Blue and White. so Killinczr launched another pass swift fling far to the side There didn’t seem to be anybody in that vi cinity, but the fighting Haines sudden ~ bobbed up and a flying leap for the oval, got his fingers barely ON the ball. !uggled it for a moment and then fell but still managed to keep the leather. 1t was marvellous catch and onlv fine baseball player like Haines could have made it. Pennsylvania Men Desperate Another forward pass. Killinger to Brown, netted twelve yards. Way ripped off five more and then made it hrst down, although he was nearly killed in the bargain, so fiercely was he tackled. Now State was on the TOyard line. Lchigh called time out while its midget captain implored his band of lightweights to hold fast. kiillnger tried the end and dragged four men five yards Haines rode his way, through the center for three more, while seven Lehigh players actually rode him in an attempt to haul him down. And then the slippery Wav was given the ball and he eased across the line with all the smoothness of an eel. Rauch kicked the goal and it was then that State crowds turned to 60 wild, That was all they wanted-a tie, and they were quite willing to cali 1t quits for the afternoon. The rest of the game, as in the first two PERIODS. was simply a battle. hank” Gulick and Goldman. Larkin and Savaria, McGinnis, Way and Kill niger, suca performances as these fell lows turned in didn’t appear to ho rumanly possible unless one could he on hand to see them. This game will easily go down in football history of 1920 as one Of the greatest and fiercest struggles Of the season. The lineup: Lehigh o. Penn STATE t7> .arkin .........L. E....... PENN STATE PLAYS LEHIGH A TIE GAME Eastonians Held Lead Up to Last Few Minutes. Special Despatch 10 THE NEW YORK HERALD BETH LEHEM. Pa. Nov. ID Defending their goal line throughout thu greater part of the game, Penn State rallied in the last five minutes of play to-day, and ‘.fter a series OF forward passes Charlie Way skirted Lehigh’s right end and STAYED off defeat by scoring touch down. The score was { 10 Z. The Centre county eollegians, ! to favorites before the game, received the greatest surprise of the season, and it was only due to successful forward passes In desperate effort to equal the Lehigh touchdown made early III the game that defeat was avoided. Hank Quick. on the receiving end Of forward PASS, went across the line for he first score TIL touchdown came after Rote had shot a forward pass to Harrington. who ran sixty yards to States 1-yard line and climaxed one Of .ehigh’s greatest efforts. Lehigh kicked off, and on The first play Killinger was thrown for an eight yard loss Two offsIde penalties forced State to punt, and on the first play Harper, a freshman fullback. was carried off the field and Douglas sent in to replace him. An exchange of punts in Which LehlLh had the decided better Of The duel ended the first period with the ball in Lchighs possession on their own l5-yard line. Worried by Lehigh. Throughout the greater part of the second period State was again on the defensive, and it was plainly seen that the Lehigh line was giving the Bezdek proteges no end of worry. Repeated efforts to penetrate the Lehigh defence failed and the half ended when Her rington punted ever the goal line end. The bail was brought out to States % yard line. Captain Harrington, call ing signals for Lehigh and doing the kicking. booted from his own 10 yard line and for eighty yard kick. the ball TO ling to States 10 yard line. Captain Harrington thrilled the spec tators when he caught a forward pass OF twenty-five yards, thrown by Rote in the third period. and raced down the field to States . yard line. where he was tackled. Another attempt at a forward pass resulted in Rote being thrown for a five yard loss. On the next play Savaria hit off tackle for three yards. and 1t looked as though Lehigh would be forced to kick or lose the ball On downs, instead of trying to penetrate the line. A forward pass formation was called, and Rote passed to Guick. who was over the goal line and scored the touchdown. Ma g nnes kicked the goal. Lehigh threatened to add to this score in the same period when Maginnes at. tempted n field goal from the 40 yard line, the ball missing the uprights b. inches.
