Penn State Battles to ScOreLeSS Tie With Pitt Panthers Have Slight Advantage In Ground Gaining Until Tom Davies Is Hurt-35, 900 Cheer as Tide Shifts in Hard Fought Game. Special Despatch to THD NEW YORK HERALR PITTsBURG, Pa. Nov. e5.-Pitt Pan Their and Penn State Lion clawed Vi ciously at each other in six inches of mud here to-day for sixty minutes but could reach no decision. The final score, 0 to 0. just about indicates the relative strength of the two teams More than $4,000 persons cheered wildly as the tide of battle swayed first toward one end of the field and then the other But while the eevens of Warner and BeZdek appeared to be on even terms Pitts burg held whatever advantage might be conceded The Blue and Gold out gained their opponents, threatened to score thrice TO States single offensive and followed the ball more closely than the visitors. 1t was undoubtedly the greatest exhibition of the fall pastime ever witnessed here. Stung to the quick by the crush ing defeat administered by the Nittany Lion a year ago, the Panther fought desperately to gain back the advantage. Capt. Hesss team struggled equally as hard to retain the lead. At no time was there a let up in the play, tackles were clean and hard and the lines charged low and with great force. Pitts forwards, which have not held up under sustained attack thus far this fall, sue cessfully threw back Charley Way and Hinkie Haines, States premier oval advancers, time after time for big losses. The Panther backs likewise were held. but two drives early in the contest aucured i’ll for Penn State and were stopped only in the shadow of the lat ter’s goal posts. The Painters first attack began when a Pitt player recovered a State tumble on the Pitt 4l-yard line. Tom Davies circled the left wing for three yards and Quarterback Holleran smashed through the centre for fifteen more. Six yards was Davies’s contributton on the next play at right end and Anderson made it first down on the Penn State 19-yard chalk. Anderson added nine yards on two plunges at the centre of the line and Davies made it another first down on the Blue and White S-yard line. Near and Yet So Far. The Pitt stands rose and demanded touchdown as Haines threw McCracken for no gain at left end. Davies picked I’D two yards at centre and two more at right end, placing the oval on the States 4-yard line. The little Panther halfback was hurt on the play. When the teams had changed ~oals Davies fell back to the 1O-yard line for try at goal from placement. His boot went to the left of the uprights and State took the ball on its own 20-yard line. An exchange of punts and a tumble by Killinger. Penn State quarterback. gave Pitt the ball on the Blue and White 43-yard line. Davies and Anderson found holes in right and left end for a net gain of nine yards and Anderson made it first down on state 53-yaro line. Five yards were added When NC Cracker went off left tackle and An derson made it first down on the state 22-yard line with n six yard plunge through right guard. Davies was hurt on the play and was taken out IN favor OF Byers McCracken went Off lett tackle for five yards and then took the ball around left end to states l2-Saro line. Byers and Anderson earned eight wards on the left side OF the line. but the advantage was lost when stein bad pass was recovered by Byers on States 12-yard line. Byers’s snort iorward pass to Anderson was incomplete and state again took the ball on us own award line. The half ended soon after. Penn States big chance 10 score came IA the third period. when Byers was forced to punt to Killinger from ms own goal line. state put the ball In pay on the Pitt 80 yard line. Way and killinger started offensive off-tackle and through guard stabs that could not be held. IL was first down on the Pitt ~ yard Inc when Haines drove into right tackle Tor a gain OF five yards. Way and taines added three more on cracks at the right and left side OF the Pitt line. with one yard TO go to make II first down way swung wide around left end and was stopped with n loss of one yar9 ana The danger. was over the Blue and Gold getting the ball on downs and punting out OF danger. The Final Attack. PITT started it’s final attack with only four minutes remaining to play. LESS hunted to Byers i’m midfield and II was .l...o- n-d. lnNitl- the PAN
