HARVARD TEAM BEATS VIRGINIA. ELEVEN EASILY Crimson Attack Shows Power in Rolling Up AZ Point Score. CAPTAIN MURRAY STARS SOutherners Force Crimson Substitutes to Battle Hard to Prevent Score. CAPTAIN MURRAY STARS Special Despatch TO THE Sun. CAMBRIDGE, Mass, Oct 25--The Harward varsity football team reaped a ~ point harvest against University of Virginia in the stadium this afternoon. scoring seven touchdowns and getting goals on In all except two. The regular team got about half the points before substitutes were sent in. The second stringers, against a light and very tired set of college boys. crossed the goal line four times. Against the substitutes however Virginia, because of Russelrs ability to get the ball on a tumble by Freddie Church. was able to try out the Crimson’s defense we’ll In its own territory. ! From the 30 yard line, for a few | PUSHES, the defense was found wanting | because the Southerners, opening up brilliant attack swept to the Crimsons Q yard line, There. on a fourth down, with two yards to go. Rinehart threw a | forward pass into the end zone. Russell being Just able to reach the ball. The Charlottesville team provided Harvard with no such test as It had q week ago Except for fumbling. Harvard was able to gain almost at will after once being stopped for downs early in the game. Brilliant Open Work. Fine interference and brilliant open field running placed Fishers team in position for many of its scores, and at the finish the linemen and the backs did some great plugging for the points. 1t was on the line. however, that Harvard | again showed its team play, and this afternoons speed would have served to get a good sized score against an oppo- nent not a little better than the Virginians to-day. Harvards play in the first quarter was better and longer sustained than in the Brown game. the Cambridge line and backs showing benefits of their hard | drilling during the last week. Particularly was the interference for the open field running better organized than anything seen on Sold ers Field this year. Two touchdowns were made In the first twelve minutes. and at the end of the first quarter the ball had been car ried to Virginia’s yard line. to be plugged over from there on the first play Of the next quarter. In these twelve minutes Harvard was together as a team beautifully. The running of Murray, Humphrey and Hor- ween was good in itself. but the for wards and the backs themselves piled into the play in a way that reminded one OF the days when players like Hard wick. Bradec and Mahan were clipping , out tackers. Harvard. receiving the kickoff, adj vanced for a first down and then Muir ray, running from kicker’s position broke clearly through the Virginlans left wing and covering nearly forty-five !, yards before he was caught by the Southeners’ quarterback within fifteen yards of their goal. Here Harvard was helped by AN opponents offside play, but Immediately lost its punch and was held for downs on the yard line. Virginia. however, could not rush the ball out yard and after getting the punt from II. Rinehart Murray romped , back TO his opponents 80 yard line. , Humphrey added a ten yard gain and then the Charlottesville boys were Off side twice. Starting again from the Is yard line Harvard delivered a scoring punch In earnest and Humphrey shot across for the first touchdown. from which Murray failed to kick the goal. The Harvard leader then made up for this inaccuracy , by running the kickoff back for flfty-one yards, well past the middle of the field The ball was lost temporarily when , Henkins intercepted a forward pass ! Virginia punted poorly. Horween Breaks Away. After one play Arnold Horweeu broke through the Southerner’s left wing for J 81 yards In making the run Horween | showed ali lllt DIIiIdHCy pTtulCltu lot | him, when he came back to the form he : showed as a freshman three years ago ; He was tackled at least three times, and once four Virginans were at him at once. But he shook them all loose and finally was stopped only foot from the goal line. | A touchdown came on the first play From the next kick off, Humphrey ran J the ball back to Virginia’s 80 yard line, covering nearly seventy yards and being : prevented by Burnett from getting alto ( gether clear. Harvard then bent to the line attack, again and covered the last thirty yards in Ave plays There was no more scoring in the second PERIOD in which Harvard had the ball in its 60 ponent’s territory all the time. In the second half. with new men, Harvard ripped things up with VEN geance. Church was the brilliant performer, his open field runs equalling any Eddie Casey would have been able to ! make. One score was made on thirty yards OF plugging after Philbin intercepted a forward pass. Nirginias one chance, In the middle ! of the half. was brilliant Russell COM pleted two forward passes and Seward once nearly broke loose for “A clear field. Harvard braced after first down on tho sixteen yard line and the Virginians did i not have the break” with their final Harvard go. Virginia to). Ryan........... Left end .....J j, Rinehart SedEwick.
