MIDDIES DECISNELY DEFEAT GEORGETOWN Playing True 10 Form, They Roll Up Score Of 27 to a HILLTOPPERS OUTCLASSED Fine Forward Pass, A Feature Of Game Enabled Them 10 Score Ia Clos ing hinutes. fHb EAibutCSs Before a crowd that broke all rec ords of attendance at football games at the Naval Academy in recent years, the Midshipmen football team admin istered a decisively defeat to the eleven of Georgetown University, Of Washington, on Farragut Field Saturday afternoon. The final count was: Navy, 2S; Georgetown. Z. The Wash ingtonians put up plucky fight, but they were almost hopelessly at the mercy of the powerful Navy machine Ii was estimated that between 5000 and 5000 persons witnessed the game It was the largest crowd that has at tended an athletic event in Annapolis for a number of years. About 500 Washingtonions, the majority OF them alumni or undergraduates of George town, came over on special cars of the Washington, Baltimore and An napolis Electric Railway. Many others made the trip in automobiles. Many Baltimoreans were seen. Although strict war regulations are now in force at the government reservation. and have been for several months, the gates were flung open for the game, and, in spite of the many strangers, good order was observed. The Midshipmen of the regiment also made the most of the contest. The fact that prospects for game with the rival West Point Cadets seem TO have vanished, they held a demon stration prior to the game that resembled the ceremonies that attend the Army–Navy contest One battalion Of the regiment, marching to the music of the bugle and drum corps, came upon the field and at the appointed stand. Throughout the game the Mid dies sang and cheered in encourage ment of their team. The Middies did ust about what had been expected of them. Close students of the game felt that they would prove about three touchdowns better than the IIilltoppers and this prediction ran true to the point Four times the sailors invaded the goal line of the FOE and all of the resultant tries for goal were successful A brilliant forward pass between Gilroy and Whelan in the final period of play saw ed Georgetown from a whitewash. Makes Perfect Forward. This was the most spectacular play of the game, although Martin and the rest of the Navy backs made some dashing gains. The heave of the ball by Cilroy was from midfield. 1t travelled 10 yards and was received in perfect form by Whelan who zigzagged his way pas three opposing tacklers until he had planted the ball behind the coveted goal line. Maloney kicked an easy goal. All doubt that may have existed in the minds of many as to whether the Navy has a team rated among the best if not the peer OF others in the country, ought to be removed by the decisive victory and the slashing play by which it was brought about Except for the fine forward pass that gave Georgetown its only score, the visitors at no other stage of the bat tle got within the Middies’ 40-yard chalk, so strong was the Navy defense. During the first few minutes of the initial period neither team was able to make much progress, but the Mid dies soon found themselves, and following an exchange of punts, Mar tin, who, by the way, was the star performer of the contest, circled Georgetown’s right wing for a sprint of SO yards that planted the ball on the visitors 30-yard mark. Ingram then smashed his way through the line for a 15-yardgain, and in four more plays Butler went through tackle for the first touchdown, and Ingram kick ed goal Time alone prevented a sec ond score in the first stanza, as the Sailors had the leather only five yards away from the coveted mark. But as soon as play was resumed for the sec ond period, another touchdown was registered. 1t was Butler again who did the work and Ingram kicked goal. The Middies were now playing in whirlwind style. and three minutes later Martin shot across for the third touchdown. Ingram again kicking goal In the third period the Sailors scored their fourth touchdown Mar tin did the trick on a spectacular run of % yards Ingram kicked his fourth straight goal Navy all but made another score in this period, but Roberts fumbled the ball rs he went over the line and a Georgetown man fell on it for a touchback At this stage and during the remainder Of the struggle both teams played rather listlessly as compared to their work in the first half There was a tendency to tumble on both sides. and kicking was frequently resorted TO. The Middies tried hard to hang up another score in the final quarter but without avail, so the outstanding feature of the remaining minutes of play, was the brilliant forward pass that was reeled off by the Georgetown lads. Though the game was fiercely contested, it was entirely free of any roughness and only on one occasion were the officials called upou to in
