CORNELL DEFEAT BIG SURPRISE FOR FOOTBALL WORLD War seems to have levelled most of the class distinctions in intercollegiate football. Witness the fate of the Cor nell eleven in the game with Williams last Saturday. On paper pr. Sharpe’s team seemed far too strong. for Fred Walkers combination. but that did not stop Williams from outplaying Cornell and winning by 14 to 10. The result indicates just what may be expected in football this year. A week previous Williams had a hard time beating Union 13 to 6, and Union lost to Amherst on Saturday, 19 to 6. Last year Williams with far stronger eleven than 1t has now, was swamped by Cornell. AZ to 0. It generally was supposed that with the loss of their leading players the ratio of strength between Cornell and Williams would be about what it was in 1916. But ‘dope’‘ appears to count for naught in these stirring war times. Cornell proved far weaker than 1t had been accounted. Through it out weighed Williams by big margin, the Ithaca team was slow and de- veleloped a defence against neither q straight nor an aerial attack. When Williams opened up in. in the fna, PCA4Co OOA iACAi ASAl LOs plGcGS. II the Red team is to be half as big as it has been in recent years it will have to improve by about 100 per cent. Next to the Cornell downfall the biggest upset last Saturday was the defeat of Rutgers by Syracuse, IA to 10. Syracuse holds it would have made the tally bigger but for its hay ing had a lot of cripples. Be that l as it may, the result would do credit to the greatest strength Syracuse l could put on the field. While both teams had been expected to score it was thought that Foster Sanford’s | eleven would prove just little | stronger. Either Syracuse has been underrat- | ed or Rutgers has been overrated A real line on Syracuse will be obtained l On Saturday. when 1t plays Pittsburgh. l Glenn Warner has almost as strong a team as he had last year, when it beat l Syracuse so unexpectedly by 30 to O. Pitt already has beaten West Vir- l ginia, 14 to g; Bethany, 40 to 0, and I.ehigh,, Al to 0-altogether rather impressive record. l The Army, which appears to be Pitts closest rival for leading honors 1 just now, continued it’s victorious iiir1iSh dt lAe cAp0iiSo O1 virginia MIL tary Institute. s4 to O. The beating | would have been even worse had the l West Pointers used Wand egraaf, who is on the injured list; McQuarries, who I is ineligible, and Vidal, who is doins | some extra guard work for having i been mixed up in the recent hazine scandal. The three named would make a respectable nucleus for any team. However. the Army’s game served to show that Oliphant is jus as busy as ever.
