  ILLINOIS DEFEATS KANSAS; Y TO 0 Zuppke Backs Tear Up Jayhawkers Forward Line in Opening Game Of Season. Urbans, Ill. Oct. Bob Zuppke’s green IlIini had little trouble winning from Kansas by a score of = to o Sat urday The IIlini set one record for an opening game They never FUN bied once While there were only four veterans IN the lineup. the IlIiui worked preciseIy, due in great measure to the clever quarterback performance of Nichols, who lived up to advance no tices. Zuppke’s backheld in general showed great promise. CharpieT, the ex-lineman, whom Zuppke is develop ing into q fuilback, never failed TO gain. Kansas presented an impressive front. outweighing the Illini. but the Jayhaw kers’ backs did not count much. Runs by Nichols and Halls took the ball to the Kansas goal. where Charpter made a brilliant plunge OF 10 yards across the goal line The Tlini seemed to be striking a good gait at the opening Of the fourth quarter bat Zuppke withdrew practicaIiy his whole eleven and the reserves were unable to make consistent gains. The ball sagged back and forth without a score. Illinois held 50 simple style of play which gave little chanaa For the spectacular. and the most impressive features were those Of Nichols in run ming back punts
