INDIANA AND TUFTS TOPLAY BIG GAME . Middle Western Grid Follow ers Hope for Victory Over Eastern Eleven. CENTRAL BEATS WESTERN | The eyes of the middle western foot | ball woNd this week are turned toward the clash at Indianapolis between Indiana University and Tufts College. Colgate, a short while ago. made an invasion OF ! that section and trounced the University of Illinois. the best of the eievens between the Alleghanies and Mississippi for the last three years. Followers Of the grid iron are wondering il Tufts will repeat the dose to Indiana that Colgate admin stered to Illinois. .-. | The game for Indiana looms. up as a great possibility, following the defeat OF Harvard and the holding of Princeton to | a 0-to-3 score by Tufts If Indiana can win from the Medford aggregation, it will gain a prominence that it could not by | victory in any other one contest Tufts looms up this year as one of the most i formidab BILE elevens in the east and lnd1ana will have to play a whole lot better | foot ball than 1t has in any of Its previous | struggles if it is to emerge the victor. | OF course, the long trip will be to the dis ! advantage of Tufts. but it is likely that the players will be taken west early enough to get complete rest before the play. starts. Based on what the teams have shown in the struggles that already have taken place Tufts should be the victor. Just as was expected. Central High won from Western in the opening game of the scholastic gridiron series. Cen trails victory, though, was not as clean cut as had been looked for by those familiar with its superiority in weight and experience. Western played fine foot ball at times, though it did not show the consistency necessary to score. The Red and White lineup was composed of men who have seen little in the way of real foot ball struggles, while Central had many men who took part in the battles in 1915. Western gained almost as much ground in straight rushing as Central. though Central’s greater weight and experience enabled it to produce the punch to score points. Although Central won by three touchdowns, 20 to 0, it did not show that much superiority in ground gaining. 1t was in the handling of the ball. general alertness and ability to take advantage of their opponents players the Comfortable margin. Central showed enough yesterday to convince it’s followers that the only opponents it need fear are Business and Tech. That has been the feeling for some time, but it needed the actual test against either Western or Eastern in order to convince. Central evidently is stronger than it was a year ago. is well coached and should prove a worthy opponent for the capable teams | which represent Business and Tech. l. Neill. the big Pennsylvania guard. who was protested by Penn State and barred from the game at Philadelphia last Sat urday, is to be used by Pennsylvania thi j week against the University of Pitts burgh. When told that Penn intended using Neill. Karl Davis. graduate man ager of athletics at Pittsburgh, is reported to have made this statement: The eligibility of Ne:H or any other man rests with Penn. If the authorities says he is eligible that makes it SO. SO | far as we are concerned. and we will make no protest. We want Penn to have their; very best team In the field. for we feel that the Blue and Gold has the edge on them with all their available ma terial in the lineup. and they are well come to Neil.” | An interesting sidelight on the Uni versity of Virginia-Georgia game last | week was told today by “Maggy” Ma coffin, former University of Michigan | halfback, who was one of the officials | Magoffin related how Virginia had | twice won from Georgia in the last three years by scoring with only a few | seconds left to play.
