DEFEAT OF BUCKNELL ENCOURAGES NAVY The Playing Of GOodstein and Ward Distinctly Good in Saturdays Game. BUCKNELL’S PLUCKY EFFORT. To Get Rid ofthe Jinx Afflictiug Them All Season, Fails---Final Score Is to 3 Favors Navy Team. No great encouragement was delived by the friends OF the Naval Academy football team from the fact that il defeated Bucknell Saturday by l2 to ,. Though showing, occasional ilashe of the punch that wins. the good work was nearly rendered nugatory by fun bling and poor judgment and other faults that characterize q green team. However. some good work was dcne lty Davis, Martin, Blodgett and Orr. and, on the whole. the line showed Improvement in its defensive work The I laying Of Goo lstein AID ‘Vc.d was distinctly good. 1t was very plain. from the start that Pucknell had weak team in all the important departments Of the game, and it has not crossed an opponents goalline this season. It’s line was weak in several places, and they had ro back that displayed any particular speed or punch FIom the very start. the Navy’s straight line play could gain. otter eight to ten yards light through the line. tut IN nearly every instance a blunder or misplay would prevent the groundgaining from resulting in a score Buclnell made a plucl1y effort to get rid of the jinx wnich has been afIlicting it this season, and tried number of forward pass plays at the start. They were not able to cross the mid shipments eoaiiine. but they did get the ball to their 20-yard line, and Hen dren dropped back to the 80 yard line and lifted 2 nice goal through a drop kick 1t was q difficult kick, as il was from considerable angle Up TO the latter part of the second | half. Bucknell was rot endangered, | as they were always able to hold suffciently to get the ball, and Mangan kicked with judgment and for good distances. The punches OF Davis and ! Martin proved too much for the visit | ors in the second period, and they | were able to carry the ball over on a series of drives past tackle The third | quarter was standoff. but in the final | period, with the help of Vail and Da- Wis. the ball was carried to Buclnell’s 10-yard line. from which a forward pass from Craig to Blodgett took the ! ball over the line 1t was evident in the second period that The midshipmen lad stronger team than their opponents, but FUN ! bles and mispleys at critical times, with many penalties inflicted by Ref cree Thon. pson, delayed the score. 1t came, however, towards the close of the period. Martin carrying the ball over. and Blodget making the score a tic by kicking a goal whenever Bucknell got the ball, it | tried its forward pass plays, but did not succeed in making further gains with it, while Mangan’s excellent | kicking was a bic factor in preventing further scoring by the midshipmen during the second and third quarters. In the final quarter. after Davis and Vail had made some good gains, a forward pas play Craig to Blodgett, gained ten yards and : touchdown. The Academy team did not indicate that it had gone forward to any extent, though there was some good individual playing. By far the best work was done by Orr, the little Navy | quarter, who ran twice through a broken field for upwards of 40 yards Davis. Martin and Vail, carried the ball well. and the work of Ward and Goodstein in the line vas notable for its power and DASH Bucknell was strong only in the kicking game, and in many essentials the grade Of football on either side was nearer that of high schools than colNiate institutions.

Navy CAPTURES GAME FROM BUCKNELL team Pennsylvanians Put Up Great Fight Against Annapolis Eleven. Losing by IS to 3 Score. Annapolis. Nov. 6.-Showing that they still lack the necessary punch” and that what virtue there is in them either in at tack OF defense is dependent almost en-. tirely upon Martin. Orr, and other first year men. Navy football players managed 10 squeeze out a l3 20 victory over Bucknell this afternoon. The visitors not only drew first blood with a drop kick early in the initial period. but held the Sailors even until the halfway period. While the Middies at times during the latter part Of the game managed to bore successfully through the light Bucknell line in midfeld, they could not deliver the goods when the 20-yard line was passed. Their only variation of old-fashioned football. two forward-pass formations. were erratic in the extreme. appearing to hit or miss affairs in which little protectons was given the men at either end OF the play. Although Bucknell was beaten. the Sailors could not even score until their superior weight had worn the WIS., itOrs out I.ine-uD.
