Football may come and football may go, but the surprises will go on forever. This fact has been thor oughly demonstrated to lovers OF the autumn pastime season after season by the repeated defeats of aggregatons apparently much stronger than the victorious elevens. Aside from the defeat of the Yale Bulldog at the hands of Washington and Jefferson, q college that has stu dent body OF scarcely more than 400 young men, the. victory of Cornell over Harvard, and the drubbing ad ministered Dartmouth by the Prince ton Tigers, the games in which elevens of the South Atlantic Division participated were also franght with some surprises. The game between Washington and Lee and West Virginia University also came as complete surprise. With the score s to 6 standing In favor OF the West Nirginians. the bali on tie two-yard line IN the Generars possession. the Morgantown eleven.s coach called his charges off the field, AS result the game was forfeited to Washington and Lee l to 0. While In all probability the Generals would have triumphed over their opponents. had not the West Virginias been called OF the field. football follow In Virginia expected the Washing ton and Lee outfit TO win by a much wider margin, in view OF the easy victory Of the Generals over the West Virginian Wesleyan. which eleven has been picked by wiseaeres to win the championship of that State. In connection with this game, it may also be said that the West Virginia coach showed poor craftsmanship by call ing his proteges from the field when
