DOPE UPSET in EAST SATURDAY Washington Jefferson. Fittsburg, Lafayette, and Cornell Show Strength. The football results Saturday con tanned more big surprises than have been sprung in many years. The big gest surprise, of course, was the hard fought game between Harvard and Washington and Jefferson. The w and J.. bunch led the big Crimson un’ til the last part of the game, and Harvard was fortunate to push over the touchdown that brought them a 10 to 9 victory. Harvard, of course, vas without the services of Brickley, Mahan and Logan, but Haughton has been claiming all year that he had substitutes plenty able to take the places Of these men. Brickley is out of the game for good, undergoing an operation appendicitis on Saturday. This will be a big blow to the Crimson, as the entire attack was built around Brickley. corneiI-c carlisle. Another surprise was the defeat Of Carlisle by Cornell. This 81 to 0 vic tory for the Ithacans Proves that there has been a reawakening of the fighting spirit since the big Read team vas defeated by Colgate and Pitts burg. Carlisle. however, is weaker this year than for many years. Penn-Lafayette. Little Lafayette, in holding the big team to a scoreless tie, showed that the Philadelphians are weaker this year than last, when they were defeated by both Michigan and Cornell. Pittsburg-Navy The football fortunes of Pittsbure are certainly on the upgrade. Their victory w Cornell was the first bis stroke, but when they defeated the Navy last Saturday, 10 to g., they showed real class, which will entitle them to no little consideration. In the West. Most of the western teams played true to form Saturday. 1t was exthat Chicago’s victory over Northwestern would be decisive, and the % to 0 win was, therefore, not much of a surprise. Illinois showed great strength by trimming Indiana, 81 to 0, and it is noticeable that ILL nois has showed remarkable progress last season and this. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. BY scoring almost at will against the usually strong Marquette outfit. Juneau’s Wisconsin machine proved that it is stronger than has been gen orally believed. The 48 to 0 count is certainly good evidence of a strong system Of attack, and several new men showed up as stars on the detense. The methods of Juneau have been criticized more or less for the last year, but this years team may vindicate him.. It would seem that a good coach for the line is the add ton needed worse than-anything else at Wisconsin. Michigan.Vanderhilt. Owing to the fact that the Michigan–Vandenbilt game was played on a very muddy field. Michigan’s % to 8 victory over the Colonies is not a full estimate of the Wolverines strength, although it shows on its face that Yost’s team this year has just as strong IN attack as in 1913, perhaps stronger, and that, the defense is certainly stronger. Michigan made three fumOles, IN account of the mud. that lost her as many to%uchdowns. BY a field goal from the 25-yard line, Splawn showed that he will have the edge over Harvard on the S1st, now that Erickley is out of the game, and Maulbetch proved his wonderful abil ity as a line plunger. ‘Notre DANES Offense. BY simply annihilating Rose Poly los to O, Notre Dame gave a beautiful, specimen of her offensive strength Rose Poly is not much.of a team, but such a tremendous pile.up of score goes to show that the Catholics have perfected a system of attack far su perior to that which enabled them tt beat the Army last year. When Eich enlaub and Company get, busy witt Yale, the Bulldog is due to receive some wallops that will hurt. In Van Aiken, g ~19-year-old half back, Purdue has evidently discover ed a second Oliphant. This lad scor ed three touchdowns against Western Reserve, Purdue beating the Cleve land bunch, 26 to o..
