NO C|NCH FOR YALE Dark Blue Scores Only Fl / Points Against Virginia. MAKES SEVEN ON A FLUKE Quarterback Gooch Scores Seven First Downs and Is Star II of Game. NEW HAvENf1 Conn, October s. Twenty-one points was the most the Yale regulars could roll up today, while Virginia was held scoreless. One OF the touchdowns was made by Legore with no opposition when he picked up a pass which had touched the ground and ran twenty-five yards to the goal line. The Virginia team, thinking the ball dead after it touched the ground made no attempt to tackle the runner but the referee claimed the pass was backward instead of forward and al lowed the score. Gooch. the visitors quarterback, was the individual star of the game, maxi ing seven first downs for his team and several runs of more than fifteen yards. Capt. Mayer also contributed several long end runs. while White played a beautiful game at end. receiving two forward passes for gains of thirty yards each Gooch held his own in punting until Pumpelly was put in the game, the latter getting off two for distance of fifty yards each. Legore kicked three goals after touchdownS in as many attempts. The game was a very interesting one to watch, Virginia get ting within Yale’s 15-yard line on three occasions and threatening to score on several others. Ward missed an easy opportunity for field goal in the sec ond quarter. when the ball went under the cross bar. Considering the fact that it was their first contest with one of the big four elevens in a number of years. the southerners made a good impression with both their own coaches and those of the Yale squad. Walter Camp, the famous critic, witnessed the game and watched the running and passing of Gooch with a great deal of interest. The Virginia team was entertained by the New York alumni in New York. and will return home tonight. Lineup and summary:
