Beats Maine Eleven in Way to Lend Encourage ment for the Future. LIE GORE SHINES IN BLUE BACKFIELD Forward Passes Serve to Advance the Ball Many Yards and Open Way, to Scores. New Haven, Sept. 2G.--7With a fast running .backfsld and q line which exceeded expectations, Yale opened It’s football season here. this afternoon, with 20 TO 0 victory over Maine Uni yersity. Last fall the orOno players held the Blue to q seorelesS tie, but the visitors were up against q far different proposition to-day, and Yale never was in danger of being scored on. Yale lost no time in getting into the Maine forwards and the. irst touch down came on the eighth play. Wilson caught the kickoff and passed the ball to Church, who ran 70 midheld. lie tumble, and got TO Names 50-yRrd line. Smashing attacks by Ainsworth and Knowles finally resulted in the lat ! ter jamming his way over for touch ! down. lie Gore kicked an easy goal. Shortly after this Wilson passed to Lc Gore on the run, the latter shoot ing the ball on a forward pass to Higginbotham, who went over for another L tally. lie Gore failed ut the goal. Near the end of the first period an other series Of forward passes took the bali down the field rapidly to the Maine goal, and the first play of the second period landed Talbot across the line with the final touchdown. LIE Gore kicked the goal During the second half the play vas nearer the centre of the field, with Yale giving all its play a thorough try-out and sacrificing scoring opportunities to experimenting. The work Of the Yale backs was the feature of the game, the play of the suFGhanded and Aeet-footed veterans, Wilson, Ainsworth and Knowles, demonstrating the fact that the Blue will not lack for capable men, The line played low, charged briskly and showed up well on the at tack. II stopped the Maine offence short, but this was partly on account of the fact that the visitors had little concerted attack in critical moments. Yale uncovered series of delayed pass plays and short forward passes that had the Maine men completely at sea and the men handled the ball in mid-season form. Only a couple of fumbles occurred. Neither side did much kicking. Maine made first down q couple of times. Injuries were few, Kirke being the only man forced to retire-with a bad shoulder. Yale suffered severely by penalties losing some fifty yards for offside play Near the close Of the game Maine tried three forward passes, two of which were successful in netting short gains : lie Gore, the sensational player on ( the freshman team last fall, stood out / for Yale, his all around work in plung’ ing. running and kicking making him certain of being one Of the stars thi! In the Blue line Wiley, Talbot, Hig ginbotham and sheldon showed up well and II is probable Hinksy will make no radical changes in the near future. Near the end Of the second period IL Gore tried a goal from the tield, tht ball striking q player on the back ant shooting squarely between the posts Il did not count.
