BUT ONE CONTEST HERE TOMORROW Catholic University and N. A. C. Eleven Meet at Br0okIand. GEORGETOWN EXPECTS GREAT TIME WITH NAVY Blue and Gray Thinks It Has Good Chance to Win-Gallaudet Plays Fordham. BY II. c. BYRD. BY II. c. BYRD. The only foot ball game scheduled to be played in Washington tomorrow is the one between. the Catholic University and maryland Agricultural Col \ lege elevens. Both the other fnstitutions are booked for contests on for eign fields Georgetown is to go to Annapolis to play the Naval Academy, and Gallaudet will be seen in action in New York against Fordham. Catholic University is banking on the best team in it’s history, and there is much reason for its hopes because of the acquisition of much new material Several men have entered C. U. this year who will be of exceptional value to the eleven, and it will be the heavi- est combination the .Brooklanders have ever had. They-and practically every body else, for that matter-are expect ing the team to administer a defeat to the Maryland Aggies, and probably will be disappointed If they fail. M. A. G. will send the lightest aggrecation that has represented 1t in five years against the Brooklanders. The back field is extremely light, the heavi- est man in it Weighing only 152 pounds, and the lightest 1874 Whether these backs will be able to accomplish much against G: US heavy forwards remains to be seen. The Farmers NAV make a better showing than is generally expected, though their task, with green material. in facing a combination such as the Brooklanders are said to have will be a great one, to say the least. A victory for Catholic University will mean much to the school. Foot ball at the institution and many times it has taken strenuous efforts on the part of those Interested in the sport to keep things going. If this can be made successful year, and particu- larly II the opening game can be won, much will have been done to boost the game and give it the prominent place RAPIDLY growing institution such as G. y. undoubtedly is. There are those at Georgetown who expect to defeat the Navy. The Blue and Gray supporters have every confidence in their team ,and they do not hold themselves in reserve in their statements: taen .S CHARLEY Cox. graduate is the most optimistic of these ir charge. Here is the substance of his l opinion: You know We do not expect any too strong and the rivalry between the ] two Institutions too great for any thing of that kind, but do think We have the best chance in many a year to finish wfth,-a victory over the Midshipmen: They. wild not outweigh us much, ii any and about the only place they are likely to have the advantage is in their veteran backfield. You know the Sailors lost lot of their linemen, but their. backfield is almost ! intact from last year. However, we ing better work all around now than week ago. The team showed as good form as could haye been expected in the contest, with Eordham. despite the n mt Tim !, we had a splendid opportunity in the last few minutes of play. We may not defeat the Navy. but l feel sure those Midshipmen will know they have been in foot ball game if we do not” Coach Crafts of the Gallaudet eleven cannot figure why anybody should think his team ought to be favored in a game with Fordham. The Kendall Greeners probably will hot be much outweighed. but they will be against an eleven of is the way Crafts puts it: my team has no license to beat Ford ham: That New York bunch has been playing foot ball a long while. and the the average. OF course. my boys are going to put up hard fight but the only advantage l can see that will be at the start Is that Fordham will be very ovefconfident. But as far as Gal , laudet being considered a probable winner Is concerned cannot see wherein there is sufficient reason to lean that way” Gallaudet will leave here this after noon at o’clock. and the players will be entertained by the students Of the New York School for the Deaf The only contest scheduled between a big northern and southern institution this season is to be played tomorrow when Virginia goes to New Haven to face Yale. The Orange and Blue is said : to have a good chance to make a splen- : did showing. though it can hardly hope to. accomplish more than to hold the Dark BLUE to three or four touchdowns > Yale. while seldom showing a very great variety of play this early in the season, is generally strong enough to dispose of , the smaller institutions by that margin. ! fastest gait If it wants to escape an D other defeat at the hands of a smaller institution, The 1thacans are. scheduled The Colgate teams of the last few E years have been of such character as 5 to cause feelings ct apprehension among 1.-THE big schools it has played; and, to judge by the way it started last Satur- day against the Ohio Wesleyan, 1T is ex- ceptionally strong again. Colgate may jgive it tough time to wrest a victory / from the fray. Harvard is scheduled to play the Springfield Y. n. c. A. Training School. , There was time when the teams from that institution gave the Crimson , eleyens all they were looking for. but if . will hardly be powerful enough this fall to r<use Haughtons aggregation much Inconvenience. 1t may be that the Springfield athletes will prove stronger than is expected and force the Crimson ] to, play its hardest to win. but this is not likely. : Pennsylvania is pretty sure to have a rather easy time. though Franklin and Marshall may give 1t a stiffer scrirn- Image than is looked for. The Ouakars : hardly look upon Franklin and MarshalI las more than a good team for nract;oa but last year the boys from Ianca ster iwent down to PHILADELPHIA to niav TIC t game of their lives, and did, Thav mo, =, do the same this year, though Pann ( ought to get victory by at least three e ltouchdowns. t Just what Kind of showing Buck e nell Will make against Princeton ia Y hard to foretell. The Tigers seem to 8 be represented by lighter eleven e than usual. though they have over 8 come TINS In measure by the adopt tion OF the more open game Bucknell d lost its coach of last year, “By” Dick : son. who Is now at Pennsylvania, as = sisting George Brooke with the Ouak- : er eleven, and change in the system t may cause a decided setback in the e development of an eleven. Bucknell is t very weak some years, but suddenly 1t comes forth with a combination OF
