POWERFUL HARVARD BUSHES BREAK down DEFENSE OF CORNELL CRIMSON TEAM RUNS UP TWENTY THREE POINTS To SIX CAMBRIDGE, MASS, Nov. 1.-The strong Harvard team ran up twenty threepoints against Cornell on the sta dunn gridlron this afternoon and won handily. but couldn’t keep the aggressive Ithacans from crossing the Harward goal line. Cornell made a touch down near the end of THE game, and the final score was 23 to 6. The fourth period. in which Cornell broke down the Harvard defenses with a dashing rally and fought its way 70 a score, was the most interesting Pc Rod Cornell outplayed Harvard in this quarter but that was PARTLY because the Harvard team at that time was composed of substitutes. Yet Cornell wasn’t idle even with the best Harvard team in. the Wis itors rushed the ball fifty yards to Harwards 95 in the first half. and in tho whole game gained more ground and made more first downs than any previous Harvard opponent had done. Three Of Harvard’s best men. OBrien. Hitchcock and Mahan, did not play at all. and that fact may have made a good deal of difference. The interchangeable Brickiey. with his versatile activities, y as big help TO Harvard. He and Hardwick both made smashing gains through the line. Harward doing put little end running. Al diagnosing Corneifs forward passes Brickley showed marked intuition 1t was a game with an abundance of for ward passing, with Harvard turning the Cornell filings to her own advantage. Twice Brickley’s interception OF Cornelrs forward passes put Harvard within striking distance OF touch down. and each time Harvard followed with a smashing, concentrated batter ing ram. which turned the advantages into touchdowns. Brickley and Hard wick were both adept at grabbing the enen1y’s forward passes, which were much better for Harvard than for Cor nell. The way Harvard. by alertness, proflted by opposing forward passes was a. striking feature of the game. Cornell’s defense, however, fought back hard, and the Ithacans succeeded in giving the Crimson the best try-out the latter has had.

MARIAN MISSED FROM HARVARD LINEUP Crimson Defeats Cornell 23-6-Brick- ley and Mahan Effective. Cambridge, Mass, Nov 2-Har- yards football team gave Cornell a beating in the stadium Saturday after noon by score of 23 to 6. Keenness in following the ball on the part of the crimson secondary defense men was mainly responsible for the vic tory, since Cornell outpunted Harvard and rushed the ball in straight plunges almost as well The Cornell score came in the fourth quarter when almost every position in the Harvard line and backf1eId had been filled by a substitute. The Ith- acans started from the Harvard 40- yard line. and by a variety of plays, which included double and delayed passes, end runs, cross bucks and line plunges, finally pushed the ball over the goal line for the only points of sheet Brickley was the star in the Cam bridge backfeld. He scored three touchdowns and one goal from a drop kick, besides doing clever defensive work when the line was unequal to the task of solving CornelFs trick plays. Hardwick, Bricl1ley’ as partner, contributed some heavy work. espe- cially with his plunges through the centre of the line. Hardwick, how ever was weak in bunting, for in the latter part of the contest he aver the kick. while his rival in the Cor nell lineup, Barrett, was send ing the ball for sixty and seventy yard trips through the air. Harvard’S attack was weak against Cornell, and the crimson showed just how much it missed Mahan, the sen sational end runner of the backfield who is out of the game with a poison ed leg. Both Brickley and Hardwick hit the line hard and gained good dis tances but the variety of plays which fleet dodger like Mahan can offer could not be had, and the Harvard stock in trade was so limited that the crimson was often compelled to punt.

In the last fifteen minutes Coach Houghton sent his substitutes into the game, and they crumbled against tre Ithacan onslaught. Although they made a game stand and held Cornell for three downs, they could not pre- vent a score on the fourth rush. Cornell almost failed to make d touchdown, for Barrett, in plunging through a hole in center, brought up against a canvas covered goal post. There was a mass of players about him as he stood grasping the upright unable to get to the other side. He Was fortunate, however, in pushing the ball around and Referee Lan8ford ruled that the touchdown had been scored.
